I use a product from Droll Yankees called the squirrel flipper. It is battery powered but will only activate when more than 3 oz. weight is on the feeding ring. Thus 4 birds can feed with no spinning, but a squirrel will weigh enough to activate and he gets spun off. It is quite amusing to watch. They must communicate with each other because, in about a week, they do not even try any longer and just eat the seeds that the birds drop.
I envy the way you say "winter month"...not plural.

5+ years ago I lost most of my vision and am deemed "legally blind." I can see some things out of my right eye, but not a lot and thus am unable to drive a car. I was reduced to getting rides from friends or disability organizations or walking. I did this for several years. I have now moved to Bar Harbor, ME and, with the permission of the local police, I can ride my EVELO e-tricycle. It is a true blessing! It has restored my sense of freedom. I can get where I want to when I want to. It has fat tires and tackles hills effortlessly. It is a champion in the snowy weather. It has a good sized basket above the 2 back wheels and carries my groceries (and now my camera equipment). With 2 batteries I have a range of travel of about 70-80 miles. I have it governed to go up to 18-mph, but it can get going faster when going down big hills.
With this newly found freedom I made the decision to get back into photography after 40+ years not taking photos. I would never have thought of trying to take photos again without my EVELO tricycle. At this point I enjoy sunrise photos and have several sites on the island that I go in the mornings (4-5 miles away from home). This would not have been possible without my e-bike, so I say if it makes sense to you, get one and go for it.

A stop on the way to Portland could be Nubble Light in York Beach, ME. Very photographic lighthouse. Also Porpoise Harbor near Kennebunkport, ME. Nice harbor shots are possible.
