Most people in the U. S. pronounce "Nikon" "N-eye-kon." Kye, on DigitalRev and "That Nikon Guy," as well as many others, pronounce it "Nick-on." In a video of his I watched yesterday, he went out of his way to say that his pronunciation was correct because the name is based on Nippon, and it should not have the long "I" sound.

I disagree. When a vowel is followed by a double consonant, the vowel sound is shortened. "Nippon" is a perfect example. It has the double "P," so the "I" is short. It's one thing when he pronounces it that way, but when he says that everyone else is wrong, that's too much.

In the meantime, say it however you want. Canon users don't have that problem. They just have to remember not to double the "N." :D

The proper way is Knee-kon Jerry. I take Japanese language classes and my Sensei (Japanese born - Japanese Language teacher) shoots Nikon  The double 'p' in Nippon only extends the 'p' sound. The 'Ni' vowel sound for them is like our 'Knee'. I say 'vowel sounds' because Japanese is all vowel sounds with some modifiers. And their vowels are not the same as ours, needless to say: Ah, I [pronounced 'e'], U [pronounced 'ooh'], E [pronounced 'eh'], and O {pronounced just like our long or hard 'o']. With that, you can see that 'Ni' would be pronounced Ne (knee).

On the flip-side. There is no 'Ca' vowel sound in Japanese, it is a 'ka' vowel sound as in 'kaw'. Canon, as we know it actually started out being 'Kwanon' (qua-non in English) and later 'Hansa Canon' then post war 'Canon' which has absolutely nothing to do with a cannon (taihoo - pronounced 'Tie - ho - o' in English).

Japanese class [Nihon-go] over.

BTW, there wouldn't be a Nikon Camera Company had it not been for Hansa Canon.

Well....Hi- Ho Hi- Ho....its the battery grip wouldnt ya know? Has anyone had this problem with the grips on a T3i? seems to work fine when its not on...but soon as I put the grip on it...BAM!!! Its lights out in a over night....wth? Anyone have any suggestions? I bought it of course online...and I just got my newer camera about a month ago.....

Technically, what you are saying does not add up. The battery grip is nothing more than a battery container with a couple of switches (the shutter button and the power switch). You have two batteries instead of the standard one and they are positioned in such a way that they are in a parallel circuit, meaning that instead of adding voltages of the batteries, they add in the ability of additional current (amps), thus sharing the load.

As long as the camera is not on, there should be no current draw on either battery. They should just sit there and look dumb. Even if you were to keep the power switch on the grip on, if the camera is off, there should be no current draw on the batteries. If however, you leave the camera on (sleep mode after XX minutes) yes, there is current draw because the camera is not truly off. It is asleep, ready to respond at your first command. Could that possibly be your issue?

I have the grip on my 60D and personally think that the two batteries combined actually extend the use more than double (more than if I used the two individual batteries inside the camera itself). I have attributed that to the fact that the batteries share the load, thus do not heat up as much, thus at least a little more shooting power.

All of the above is being said assuming that you do not have a battery issue with one or both of the batteries themselves. I am also assuming that you are using stock LP-E8 Li-Ion type batteries and not just AA batteries in your pack.

A couple of months ago I took a fireworks video with my Canon 60D. I was amazed at the HD quality of the video. Very happy with the color of the fireworks and the clarity of them also. A couple of weeks ago I took another fireworks video and one last night. To say I am disappointed in the end result is an understatement.

I changed nothing on the camera. IS was off, autofocus was off and had it on manual. Used a tripod. Changed no settings from what they were 2 months ago. What would cause the deterioration in the video from the first fireworks till the ones last night? It was a re-formatted card last night; the first (good) one was just filling out a card I had in there. Using the 18-135 lens on the "18".

This is very maddening to me as the first video I took was so good. In fact, the wife of the guy that does these shows said that my first video was much better than her HD video camera's video. The colors were so "spot-on" that I was amazed. So was she.

Any ideas, oh great camera gurus that know SO much more than I??

Anna... There are a couple conflicting comments here. First you are speaking of the 'IS' and Autofocus, then you shift to the colors being 'spot-on" and yet later state that 'you know fuzzy'. I realize that you said that nothing was changed in the settings, but do you realize that there is a complete new set of settings for video than there are for still photos, and some of them do inter-mesh? One that I noticed on my 60D is that 'white balance' carries over from still to video. That in itself would make a huge difference in the color being 'spot-on'. I use that as an example, you might have switched to cloudy, sunny, shade or something other than AWB for still shots and it carried into your video shooting. Another possibility, especially with 'Live View' is that your focus, although manual, got bumped off of infinity? My 18-135 isn't marked with the infinity mark, and with autofocus off, the focus ring is rather loose. Being on the front end of the lens, could it have been bumped and you not noticed it on the LCD? And my last suggestion/question would be - at what 'frames per second' were you shooting? That could affect the quality of moving objects, especially at night.

I have not shot that many videos with the 60D (a ton with my S5 IS) and don't usually have my 18-135 on the camera, but having used it in the past, these are just a couple of things that I noticed that could cause the problems that you had. Hope it helps.

Peekayoh... I appreciate your input and even though I did not find the noise objectionable, will try to lower the ISO even more the next time the shot presents itself. I pride myself in shooting as low of an ISO as possible, so possibly I should have tried the 200 setting.
