Yea, they only last a month or three in a dormant camera......

I suppose it depends on one's definition of "GREATLY'........

Uh huh.

It "GREATLY" depends on ones definition.

Definitely crowded and different.

Crowded yes and I do like visual crowding and cluttering. Moderately tighter reframing would further intensify that effect. Fixing the steep "looking up" perspective in 2 or 3 shots would also contribute. But, OTOH, it all really does belong in the Gallery.

Did you test and compare the lenses with every last vestige of AE disabled ? You hafta start from ground zero to find out whatz up.

Assuming that via the above you prove that the lenses are equally bright at wide, mid and small apertures, then its time to compare the exif data. And if you have access to one more Nikon then check whether the same problem occurs with the other camera.

Acoarst there are many variables but thaz enuf to get started. No point right now in writing a miles long presentation of all the possibilities (but the UHH geeks will do that anywho). Start with the basics, as above.

You have received some interesting replies. I'd say that User ID is pretty close to the best idea. It all depends on what you really mean when you say "median telephoto." Several years ago, I went on a quest for such a lens and came home with a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 full frame zoom. It was a little over $400 at the time. I have been very pleasantly surprised at how useful that lens has been on my DX D500. If you are into equivalent full frame focal lengths, it is pretty close to a 35-180mm lens on your D3400. And it is a really good lens...better than most DX lenses, with very good VR.

My wife and I have each had an 18-200mm zoom. Hers broke (no one seems to be interested in fixing it), and I gave mine away. It's really not a particularly good lens. VR is OK, but it's not particularly sharp, and it's not made very well. An internal ribbon cable became disconnected on my wife's lens.

I suggest that you give a little more thought to what you want this lens to do for you. Then you can select more intelligently from among the suggestions.

Its funny, not laughing funny just UHH funny, that the OP asked about a medium tele zoom and most replies are peddling 18 to XXXmm do-all all-in-one "super zooms".

Other than size and cost, the main difference between a do-it-all and a medium tele is that the former tend to be mediocre and the latter are generally excellent.

Its too bad that routine 135/2.8s have pretty much fell off the edge of the world. I finally snagged a used modern example at a semi-decent price, but its so much bigger that the oldies. The few modern 135s available are nearly always big fat f/1.8 versions.

Batteries in modern electronics [including most cameras] are subject to parasitic drain supporting the Real Time Clock.
This GREATLY reduces the storage life while in the 📷 camera.

At least 0.01%, possibly twice that. Beware !
The clock drain is so high that back when the clocks ran on a dedicated battery the clocks could kill their little coin sized battery in just about eight or nine years.

Had I mentioned earlier that UHHs quarterly battery threads are populated by paranoids, phony experts, etc ? I did ? Well, mercy me.

I had a third party swell...

One can't attach a "swelling problem" to a brand like he want to do as all brands have the propensity to do so.
Two reports of "one brand" is NOT sufficient statistically to roast a manufacturer.

Exactly. Have a nice day, and a swell time ;-)

Interesting, my OEM batteries have NEVER swelled. These batteries you say swell, are they OEM batteries? If so, what brand are they?
My Nikon and Sony batteries have NEVER swelled.
You may be doing every one here a favor by informing every one of the brand of battery that swells.
Thanks in advance. PLEASE.

Naming whatever brand swelled up does NOT "do everyone here a favor". Its meaningless. Fact is, schidt happens.

The only batteries I ever had swell up are the OEMs. My many Wasabies have never done it. But should I then "do everyone here a favor" and warn you all against OEM batteries ?!?

UHH has battery threads on a regular basis, heavily populated by phony experts, camera brand fanbois, and ignorant paranoids.

Hasselblad baby, Hasselblad LOL.

If you love that feeling, try a 1960s Bronica. Set one on a smooth hard surface, trigger it with a cable release, and it will visibly move while producing quite a clatter. Then trigger one hand held and feel that old thunk bump whack deep down in your bones.

See attached photo. That heavy grip ribbing on the sides is so it doesnt jump out of your hand when press the shutter release:

Bob,

I have a 500CM and one of my film backs needs service. Who would you use to service your Hasselblad?

Ive taken one apart twice, to mod and then unmod it. Theyre quite simple and the parts are not really tiny. IOW, your nearest repair shop is most likely quite qualified. Inside its more like a mantle clock, not a wrist watch.
