Fortunately I caught my selfie on a good day, although as I recall I was a little tired. The problem is with my driver's license... not sure who is on it. If I'm ever part of a crime, no one will recognize me based upon that picture... at least in my mind I can dream on!

Wow! The lighting and the soft shadows go hand in hand. Brings out the colors and the skin tones. Very nicely done. The beauty also is, that picture will be handed down generation after generation... just because Grandpa was "practicing". Continue to treat those Granddaughters like the treasures that they are.

Well, Toby doesn't like it much, plus he has the problem that my little Jack Russell mix Tara gives him a hard time about looking different and without his fur/armor when they fuss and play fight she can get a bite of Toby instead of fur. Bad enough she is the boss anyway.

He just needs to work on his "ROAR"! At times, I believe that is only advantage we men have over anything... we ROAR louder. Which is usually not the thing to do, so forget that suggestion. Oh well, the hair will grow back in... till then, Toby needs to lay low.

Excellent Pictures! When I look at them, I think about how long the pictures will be hanging on a family member's wall.... forever. Precious memories will come to family member's mind, as they view this one moment captured in time.
Three great things going for these pictures; the boy, the dog, and the photographer. Excellent Job!

I wonder if the hawk doesn't think that the crow is worth the effort to "Take Down", as there isn't enough meat to make a meal. You know, some fights aren't worth fighting. Like I said earlier, I don't ever see the hawk give a care... but your picture reveals that there might be thoughts going through their head... "Enough is Enough"!

I'm thinking that I'll take this opportunity to ask this question... I've lost track of how many times that I have seen crows harassing the hawks in mid flight. And what happens is the Hawk will just ignore them as he is cruising through the crow's area. The question I have is... have you (or other BIF photographers) seen the bird of prey grab one of these crows and end the harassment? If so, were you fortunate enough to get the Kodak moment? Your picture is the closest that have seen, where the Hawk was getting tired of these two pest, and was going to do something about it. Are these bigger birds able to maneuver fast enough to compete with the littler fowl?

Thank you for sharing, very humbling. To think men could be capable of doing such a thing. Yes, black and white was the appropriate mood shade.

EvKar, I'm the one who did the first Photoshop version that Linda used to work on to modify the background. My main point was that your original NEF file had MUCH more color than appeared in the version you posted. I used Adobe Camera Raw to bring out quite a bit of it. Frankly, I was surprised at how much color and contrast was available. I had very little time to work on it (about 10 minutes) Basically, I opened up the shadows, pulled down the highlights, tweaked the white balance, adjusted exposure slightly, added a bit of clarity, and boosted vibrance and saturation a little. I did not have time to play with the background, but there was quite a deep color quality there also. (If you download the picture you'll see what I mean.) I don't know the color of your chicks, so I may not have gotten it right in my hurried post-processing, but it definitely had data there to work with. And I think you are correct that this being a raw file meant that there was a greater dynamic range to work with in Photoshop than if it was a JPG file. I moved from darkroom dodging and burning and adjusting the enlarger timer and developer strength to doing post-processing in Photoshop and shooting with digital cameras. Honestly, the power and possibilities of digital processing are exciting, and you get better with practice. The internet has lots of free tutorial videos to help you along. Just keep trying!

Thanks ElderJames for your input on my PP learning. Taking what you and others have achieved, I'll see if I can duplicate, although it will be a hard act to follow... it will add to my experience.
