By your reckoning, most of the big time famous well respected studio operators (Bert Stern etc) should not own their resulting images. Perhaps I should have been paid more than my bosses, those "chief photographers" who, after they approved the Polaroids, would go off to meetings, or lunch, or both. They didnt stick around to push the button.

Likewise the "product shot" once again attached below was staged and lit long before the invention of photography. Ability to aim and push a button does NOT confer ownership rights. Its public domain, no matter who might make copies of it from 250,000 miles away.

You clearly don't understand how rights to pictures or intellectual property works

By taking a picture a picture of the moon, you obviously don't own the rights to all pictures of the moon - BUT - you own the rights to that exact photo of the moon - edited/unedited doesn't matter. It MAY be hard to protect that right if your photo is very hard to distinguish from other photos done by others.

When you took pictures during your employment (I assume), the rights to those photos most likely belongs/ed to the company, which paid you to take them. This was most likely part of your employment agreement.

Intellectual property works mostly the same way with one distinguishing difference: a patent cannot be issued (or defended) if the invention is not unique without prior "art". Different countries do have slightly different ways to process patent issuance and challenges. And patents do expire (in most parts of the world)

Imagination Deficit Disorder is endemic throughout UHH. Colors of Nature ? Color is not an attribute of nature. What we call color is just viewer conditioning. Theres no "there" there. "Sea State" ??!?!? Just your personal projection. Acoarst youre most welcome to see whatever you may choose to see (see erotic image below).

Not sure what you are smoking - but it must be some good shit

It doesnt look fake, just possibly quite a bit overly enhanced. Yes, more "I" would help, both on the machine side and the human side. But its an intriguing photo composite work, a finished image in its own right.

It looks 100% fake - because it is. I don't think you would be able to find that color combination anywhere in nature - but even moreso: the sea state and the surf break do not match at all

My list (actually Dr. Deming's list) envelopes those three. On all six sides. Read it again and think about it as you are reading. Staying in business implies financial sustainability and customer satisfaction in addition to a lot of other things. Customer satisfaction is only possible if what is being provided is useful. And your #3 is a Xerox copy of my #3, but is only possible if the company stays in business and is financially viable.

It really doesn't

Some entities are run at a loss (hence the reference to specifically address this). Profit is always #1 for a sustainable for profit business. A business doesn't necessarily need to produce anything - many businesses make a profit without producing anything of value. And right now there are a lot of entities that have vacant jobs as they fail to provide jobs attractive enough to make people take those jobs.

Years ago, I started a new job as total quality manager. I put together a presentation which included W. E. Deming's three reasons for the existence of a business enterprise:
1. Provide useful goods or services
2. Stay in business
3. Provide jobs.

We were a union shop, and my regional manager made me delete the third one. Didn't want me communicating any sense of value to our employees. Mostly he didn't have a clue that without people working and earning money to spend that we had no market for the stuff we were making.

If we are truly lazy enough and stupid enough to surrender everything to AI, then we deserve everything that results.

But you forgot reality:
#1 - Profit. Without profit, a company ceases to exist eventually. And owners/share holders pull out - unless it is a charitable endeavor to save something worth running a company at a loss for
#2 - Customer satisfaction - or they leave
#3 - Employees - needed to keep growing or at least maintaining

Your list is below those 3

Interesting article.
I see the photo and it does not look real at all, goofy colors that in reality I doubt could co exist at the same time. I would not see it as AI because I do not know much about it but it sure looks like a way overcooked composite of several unrelated photos. Is that what AI is?

Not only the colors - but - the sea state outside the break does not at all match the the breaking wave

Artificial intelligence - so far - can create images and text that is just that - artificial. At the current state it is easily distinguished, but that will probably change with time

For lens IS it will depend on the lens. For instance the Sigma 100-400 needs the IS off when mounted on a tripod, but the Sony 100-400 not
Yep - and the Sigma 60-600 is even worse - on a tripod the image is drifting all over the place - obviously worst at 600mm

No - roaming starts when your provider looks to connect with you to place a call to find out where you are and if you're available, and actually is going on almost 24/7. It originates at the 'home' location where your plans is based and uses a 'spider' type daemon to reach further and further away until you are located at that time.

My daughter's husband travels more than occasionally to England, and uses a plan that cost about $10.00/day that allows him to call home daily. I think his carrier is Verizon, but most likely other carriers will offer similar plans. The plan is not a permanent one, and he only activates it when he is planning to use it - maybe 30-45 days a year. Not as cheap as waiting for free WiFi, but very convenient.

At&T wireless has a similar plan $10/day - will charge you max 10 days within a billing cycle - full access calls, text data (same data limits as your at home data limits) I have it on all the time and it just activates when I am abroad - extremely convenient. Forgot to mention - only charges you for the days that you use it.

Can anyone recommend a portable backup and editing device that I can use on a photography trip to Icleand in March? I found the GNARBIX on B&H where reviews were good. My small laptop I used last in 2019 is a windows 7 device that was slow than and obsolete now. My goal.is to backup and view pictures addi.g as little weight to the camera bag as possible. I plan to have 6 SD cards with me for the 8 day trip to Iceland. Want to protect my experience!. The group has been very helpful in preparing me for my trip. Thanks in advance for any input.

Choose whatever size you need. I never use disk based backup anymore. The SSD's are far faster, no moving parts and powered via the USB connection - so also the simplest possible to use.

I would like to visit B&H. Can someone tell me how you arranged it?

Thanks.

Walk in through the front door of the store. Please visit when they are open or you might end up in a jail cell. Pretty straight forward.

Many carriers, including mine, allow cellular calling using WiFI when out of cellular range, but you typically need to have the carrier activate WiFi calling plus enabling that option on your phone. At least that’s true on IPhones - YMMV.

That typically is only within the usual coverage area - most plans do not cover VOIP abroad. But you can do VOIP by using Skype or other VOIP apps

My granddaughter just left for Spain for a couple months as an exchange student. She's smart!

When I asked, she explained that when you travel to other countries, you buy a throwaway "SIM Card" for your phone.

Yes you can do that if your phone is unlocked. Or maybe your carrier has a reasonable travel/foreign plan?
