Not only will they not repair it, they won't even sell parts anymore to reputable independent repair shops who otherwise would repair it.

And if you buy a used Nikon product you usually do not know if it is eligible for service; very possibly not.

Classic example of "My way or the Highway" and contempt for their customers. That kind of extortion is not very nice. Well, guess what? Who needs that or them? They offer nothing that Sony or Canon doesn't.

It is no secret that Nikon is fighting for its life. Their present policy will bring a small short term gain but is guaranteed to cost them sales and market share in the longer run.

The American customer deserves far better.

Nikon USA is wholly owned by Nikon. Nikon's business should be supporting the cameras they make, no matter where purchase as long as they are not stolen goods.
Nikon knows exactly who is putting the gray market cameras on the market, but they take no steps to stop the practice. They could easily cut off supplying the people selling into the gray market - but they don't. This is having your cake and eating it too. In the mean time they are relying on the American customer to prop up their profits. This is disgraceful.
It it any wonder that Canon and Sony are leaving Nikon in the dust?

I have bought several used lenses from Japanese Photo dealers through eBay and have had very good experiences.
The items were all better than their description, and all promised 30 day return privilege if I paid return shipping. But I never did. These were dealers with excellent eBay seller ratings and multiple offerings on eBay.

What I fail to understand in this thread is why people are bashing eBay and ignoring Nikon's disgraceful attitude towards repairing equipment made by them, as well as their refusal to sell parts to competent repair shops.
eBay's problems were due to rogue employees since fired. Nikon's problems are official corporate policy.

Thanks Jay. I think I have made my views clear - Nikon's behavior is totally unconscionable.
Let's hope your gear holds up without problems.

Yes, it seems we are! And I would have been glad of the now moribund move to move our county into Idaho. Maybe next year once the madness passes we can get the movement started again.

Actually, I suspect the matter has been covered a few months back. But I think it could easily be started as a new thread. I think the best way is to start the thread yourself as a new thread, closely following your original message, and then I will respond with the thrust of my message.

Let me know if you want to do this...

Cheers

Thanks Jay. Actually, you did a good job making your point in your first comment, and re-enforced it in your reply. I was pretty much seconding your comments and expanding a little. We are very much in agreement I think.

Cheers

My take is that I'd have to say it is off track - but it is an important issue.
Nikon USA is owned by Nikon, and I am quite sure Nikon USA offers an important part of their profit structure, so they are taking all possible steps to stop profit "leakage". Personally, I feel they should be required by law to offer service on any product they manufactured for at least some certain period of time. I don't have a problem with them not honoring a gray market warranty but they should certainly offer service at fair prices. And updates and recalls to products offered for free should be given to all regardless of where the camera or equipment was purchased.
My understanding is that most gray market products come from places like Hong Kong. They know where a specific product was sold from the serial number - and they could shut off supplies to the source. It is their job to enforce market discipline - not the buyer's.

Completely agree. Earlier they seemed to have quality control issues - some lenses in a manufacturing run were excellent, others rather less so, but I have heard nothing along those lines in the last several years. I think they are certainly getting their act together.

That certainly is true - today. But they are proving they can make decent lens at very low prices. I confidently predict they will soon be upping their game soon with more sophisticated lenses, autofocus and still very aggressive pricing.

The competition of third party lens makers have forced the OEM's to improve their offers to compete. This is good for all of us. For sure some 3rd part glass is better than the competing OEM glass and for less money - and also there are 3rd party lenses the OEM's don't offer at all.
If you are thinking of buying new glass, check the reviews - carefully! There are only a few reviewers of lenses I would trust, but it is not hard to figure out who is giving honest reviews and who is trying to score freebies.
Also, in the next few years I expect Chinese lens manufacturing firms to become significant players and I would not be surprised to see Thai companies as well. And believe me, the OEM's know that better than I.
