I am aware that there are many moments that I miss, especially in and around where we live, simply because I find my D750 with the Nikkor 24-120mm lens too heavy to hold reasonably still. Although I have a single pole with a quick release fitting, getting that onto the camera frequently distracts me too much and I miss the shot.

So it crossed my mind that for 'grab and shoot' pictures it might be sensible to get a smaller and lighter lens.

It depends very much on what shots you see yourself missing. If you want to catch family, etc., then I'd suggest getting a (very cheap, by comparison) f1.8 or 1.4 50mm lens--the standard for the film/full frame sensor sized cameras. The system is incredibly light with one of these on the body (I own the same system, BTW).

With the sensor size being what it is, I have found it simple to crop images to get the same results (on print) as I would have with a zoom. The two images below show this. The cropped one prints nicely on 4x6 prints at 300 dpi. Since I don't plan to make large prints, it was perfect. On most screens it's amazing!

Notwithstanding that, I agree with others about simply getting practice with the larger lens. It certainly works well (the whale shots are a testament to that--120 mm focal length).

Cheers!

I've been taking pictures on and off for many years, but never consistently. As I dig into my later decades and have developed interests in new directions (e.g. scuba diving and macro imaging), photography has moved to center stage in many ways.

I enjoy seeing what others have to offer on various topics here (both in technique, and post-processing/printing--an area I know little about but am on the curve).

Cheers!
