Bummer. I was there last September and shot away without any problems. No flash though. Such a great museum to take pictures.

Ah, I see. I was at the Van Gough in Amsterdam - absolutely no photos. They did allow you to take one picture standing next to a large Vincent self-portrait. Such a shame because there are so many great pictures to take. The "Potato Eaters" was one I would have liked to have captured.

I was just there last September and they don't allow photos of any kind. Must have changed since you were there.

Go to Herculaneum. Smaller, less crowded, and better preserved ruins

I was in the park last August after the fires and its fine. Took some nice pictures outside the park of the burn area. Great contrast to the lush valley floor and the Merced ought to be roaring. Bring a ND and polarizing filter.

Nothing to add about what others have said about the camera. Buy a good lens. For an all around lens that's inexpensive and takes pretty good pictures, the Nikon AFS DX 18-300 f3.5-6.3 is a good lens. If you can afford more (and I'm looking at this), get the AFS 70-200 f2.4..

For an in-depth understanding of the science behind photography, you can take this FREE online course from Harvard called Exposing Digital Photography @ http://digitalphotography.exposed/. There is not much about technique but if you want to understand how your camera operates, how sensor works, the physics behind light and color profiles, then this course is well worthwhile. For technique, I'd recommend Tony Northrup's book Stunning Digital Photography.

No problem. Little sensitive on some of the comments I see on the forum.

Re the pic. I was more surprised it came out better than I expected. As I was coming back from taking pictures of my grandchildren sledding, I saw the robin hopping around the tree. I was expecting it for fly off but it kept hoping branch to branch and didn't seem to bothered by me. I was wondering why it didn't fly away and then I saw it eating some berries. I took a few shots and couldn't get one I liked because of branches getting in the way. Anyway, it was some nice color in the dead of winter and a reminder that life goes on and that spring will eventually come.
