I just discovered (painfully!) that my Nikon COOLSCAN V ED scanner, the really expensive one with all the bells and whistles (and expensive accessories) no longer works with the latest version of Windows on my PC. This seems to have happened after Windows latest 'update' was automatically installed.

To add insult, the good folks at Nikon want nothing to do with me – or rather, nothing to do with this scanner. Several calls to Nikon Customer Service and the best I got was:“We no longer support it!”

The scanner still is in fine working condition, except we (ie: PC, me and it) are no longer communicating. Tried removing and re-installing the original program disc that came with it. Nada.

Seems like there should be an easy 'fix' out there.

Any suggestions?

If it is actually marketed as a “photographer's vest” you are paying extra. Check out your local sports shop's outdoor clothing section. You will also find plenty of 'no-name' travel vests on eBay. I have a couple of light weight nylon vests that I have worn on many trips to the tropics and SE Asia and one heavier black cotton one for cooler weather. I don't think any of the 3 cost more than $20 each and they have lasted for years. These also have the added advantage of providing relatively secure inside pockets for travel papers, meds, eye glasses, etc.

I have been a happy Eneloop user for a longtime. Occasionally I have had one die after long service, but what else is new? Soon after I started using them, I got a fancy MAHA MH C9000 charger. A bit of overkill, but it seems to have a few built-ins that extend the life of these batteries. It also lets me know when an individual battery is no longer taking a full charge. I note the purchase date on each set of batteries: older ones are relegated too TV remote and similar uses. Actually have a few dated 2008 that are still holding a charge.

Regularly replacing memory cards every couple of years - regardless of use - is about the cheapest form of professional insurance I can think of. And I do mean "professional." I usually keep a few of the 'older' cards for snapshooting - and replace them every once in a while. And for the same reason, I am partial to the 'name' brands: these days the differance in price compared to 'bargain band' cards is just not worth it.

The only reason I am selling it is that I have switched to another system. Flash is LESS THAN 1 YEAR OLD It is in PERFECT condition and could easily pass for new if you were looking at it over a camera store counter.

Along with the strobe:
- Extra Nissin Battery Magazine (2 Total)
- Accessory Diffuser
- Carrying Case
- Original Boxes

The photos are all un-Photoshopped shots of the actual items; they are not 'stock shots' or something copied from another source.

Everything shown: $265.00 and I will cover shipping anyplace in the Continental USA. Any place else, will be extra. And if you are in New York City, we can arrange for pick-up. I live in Greenwich Village, Lower 5th Avenue.

Thanks!

GENUINE, MADE IN USA, ORIGINAL DOMKE F-2 CASE. It is in great shape, no holes, a bit of wear; with proper care it should last another 20 or 30 years. Us it well, then sell it and make a huge profit. Or keep it as a family heirloom.

Anyway, it comes with the 'GRIPPER SHOULDER STRAP, CARRYING HANDLE, 2 PADDED INSERTS as shown (and yes they are 2 different colors, but do you really care?), also the PADDED BOTTOM PROTECTOR. I even have DOMKE ORIGINAL LUGGAGE TAG!

These are actual shots of the Domke Case offered here, not stock shots or something copied from another source.

Location is Greenwich Village, Lower 5th Avenue. I live in a doorman building so if you are in the area, you can pick it up.

$85 and it is yours. Add $10 for shipping to continental USA. We can figure shipping if you are someplace else.

There is one part of this whole discussion that I still do not understand. And before I state it, I want to be clear that I find the entire subject of child porn to be totally despicable and I have no sympathy for the 'rights' of any child pornographers. OK?

Now: it is perfectly legal to own photos of just about anything else – mass murder and so on - no matter how disgusting the subject. Having a photo of a crime, even a crime in progress is not in itself an offense. So – and presuming that the owner has not participated in making these photos - why is it then illegal to just possess these photos?

OK a really basic question: what is the difference between formatting and/or erasing a memory card? Is it necessary to do both?

When I am working I do carry back-ups and in some cases back-ups for the back-ups. Back 'in the day' I had Hasselblads and Leicas jam on rare occasions --- even though they are not supposed to. Strobes failed and sync cords were my most replaced pieces of equipment. I am relatively new to the Olympus micro 4/3 system even though I have been using it for most of the past year. One of the most important reasons I did switch (from Canon) was the reduction of size and weight. I think the appeal has something to do with gray hair, but that is another topic.

Anyway, unlike film cameras, my experience with digital gear in general is that it either works or it doesn't. There is no 'middle ground' of say, slow shutter speeds being a bit off, but usable or a strobe that will only fire on full power. These were at worst, work arounds. I also pretty well knew what to expect from my film cameras and accessories in most conditions and when there was a problem that was fixable, I usually knew how. When this Olympus camera froze, my options were fairly limited. I posted the question to see if this was something I might expect again and most importantly, to see if there was a fix that might have worked for me. It seems pretty clear that it has happened to other folks here and that shutting the camera down, removing the battery and waiting was about the only practical way to deal with the problem. The feedback is most appreciated.

Don't think it was the battery: both charged that morning and the camera really was not out in the cold that long. Also, after I went through the above, same batteries worked the rest of the day.

A couple of days ago I was out shooting with my OM-D E-M1 (with battery grip and 2 freshly charged batteries). It was a cold day, in the mid 30's F. I had the camera out for less than 30 minutes when I noticed the auto focus did not seem to work. Within a couple of minutes of that, the camera froze up completely: none of the controls worked. I tried turning it off and on, but that did not work. So I unscrewed the grip and tried again: the camera came on, worked for a few minutes and then froze complete. I mean completely: I could not even turn it off! Removed the battery, waited a few more minutes, replaced the battery and it was fine for the rest of the day.

Now here is the additional kicker: I had purchased this camera on October 28th of 2016. Yeah, it was now a year and 2 weeks and my 1 year warranty was history! Fortunately I did buy an extended warranty from my dealer (the nice folks at Adorama), so all was not as grim as could be. Nevertheless, I am a full time pro and dread the thought of this happening again. On a job.

Anyway, this was on Sunday. The next day I called Olympus. After a bit of back and forth with a couple of techs - and the advice that the camera was 'cold proof' whatever that means - one suggested that it might be a firmware problem; I went to their site and up dated firmware. Camera is still working fine. Even carried it around for a few days just to see if anything 'shakes loose.' So far, the freeze has not happened again and all seems to be working correctly.

My question is: has this sort of total freeze up happened to anyone out there using this camera? Ay idea as to cause? Did it happen more than once?
