In manual mode it only changes the meter setting. It will not automatically change the exposure. Since you are in manual mode, the camera expects you to set both the shutter speed and the aperture.

On my Nikons, I can still have auto ISO, so that is not affected.

Practice, practice, practice.

Hello everyone, My name is Beth, I have been away from photography for a couple of years and currently have chosen to get back into it. I have decided not to use photoshop via cloud as my photo editing software. I am entertaining Affinity Photo instead. I would appreciate anyone's feedback or recommendation on an alternate photo editing program.

Affinity Photo is my choice. The thing i like about Affinity is that it is cheap (no more than $50) and it has a workbook to go with it. There are also over 200 videos on different processes on the Affinity forum. It is a great resource. The workbook is not free, but the videos are.

You can download the full version to try for 15 days. I think you will love it.

Frank, I like the first one, as it's a perspective of rail lines that one doesn't normally see.

The second one looks like a contrived assembly.

Especially since it is obvious the sun is coming from the left, throwing a shadow to the right of the rails.
Still, it's a nice picture.

I've had Google Fiber installed and discontinued my Spectrum account. I thought Google had an option to select the local channels, but its just a fast internet connection and no TV options, except for an option you can buy for $60 a month that will provide the same basic and movie channels offered by Spectrum and others. Total cost is $70 for Google Fiber and $60 for the Google Channel.

I knew that I would need some other means to select local channels so I purchase Ruku for my TV's, but with all the options provided, I cannot find one that will provide the local channels. For instance, I can get CBS, but it is the national version and no local. I signed up for HULU which I thought would give me the local channel option, but if it does, I don't know how to set it up.

There is another option and that is having an external antenna to get local channels. Not that expensive which I may have to use.

Other than signing up for the Google channel, going back to Spectrum or using the external antenna, does anyone know of an option to use on Ruku?

Thanks for your help. It will be appeciated as my wife is and I are struggling to get back to the "norm".

I bought the LAVA brand HD-2805 Ultra for about 35 dollars. Have it up on a painter's pole I got from Lowes.
It has a 35dB amplifier built in the antenna. I have Spectrum internet, but I did not want the TV package. So I don't get a ton of local stations, but I get 3 channels of PBS, ABC, CBS, and Fox. along with GRIT. NBC would be nice but I can live without it. Can't think of anything else I would need. Once you have the internet anything is possible.

Paul, this man is in a different world than most of us. Just take it for what it is and don't try to rationalize what you see.

From and article from "Learning With Experts" in regards to back button focusing:

"if you forget to release the button when shooting a static object, your camera's autofocus can get seriously confused as it's expecting a moving subject – so again you might end up fluffing the shot."

I thought when using back button focusing that once you hit the button you have designated as the focus you
didn't let go until the shot was completed. ??

The statement is accurate in this respect-- If you keep the BBF button engaged, you are telling the camera to Continuously focus. So if you are using spot focusing area, the camera will move to another area and re-focus. So with static objects AND you want to re-compose the shot, push the BBF button once to focus then release the BBF, then re-compose. As the "expert" alluded to, you keep the BBF button engaged if you are focusing on a moving target like a bird in flight or a football runner.

The "expert" had the right idea. He just didn't know how to say it.

Try this around your room. Keep the BBF engaged and move your camera around to different objects. The camera should re-focus as you move your camera. Now, focus on some object then release the BBF then move the camera around. The camera will not try to re-focus.

Of course, you have to set all this up in the MENU system of your camera. I always disconnect the half-press on the shutter button so that doesn't try to focus the camera.

When I use the EC Dial +/- with my pictures on a Sony A7ii, how does the camera adjust the exposure when I'm in Aperture Priority mode? Does it effect my aperture setting, speed setting or ISO? Or does the camera do it somehow else digitally? Just curious?

I can tell you how it works on my Nikons. In anything but Manual it will actually change the exposure. In Aperture priority, it only changes the shutter speed unless you have a minimum or maximum shutter speed set that the camera cannot go to. In Manual mode, ONLY the meter setting is changed, the exposure does not change.

You need to take about 20 minutes and experiment for yourself to understand it.

Be careful of what you order, it may not be what you need!

On December 7, 2020 I placed an order through EBay for a camera lens. I ordered a Tamron AF 18-27mm F3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD lens. It arrived On December 11, 2020. Before unboxing the item I checked the packing slip. Everything matched. I opened the box to find a lens in pristine condition as described.

I mounted it on my Canon 5D Mark IV and lo and behold. The image had a major vignette issue. This lens is intended for a Canon camera with a crop sensor.
The “Di II“ suggests for use with a crop sensor camera. Oops, I goofed up.

I have done the same thing. Twice. Bought a 1.4X lens extender from B & H that was not compatible with my camera. Called B & H and they sent me a return label. I did not have to even pay for the return. That's why I always buy from the trusted dealers.

Kind of a newbie question...

Recently I became aware of Gigapixel AI. I have the 30 day trial now. Pretty amazing to me what it did for the old images I've run through it.

All my lenses are the lower end E mount Sony's on my a6000, purchased used in the +/- 200 buck range. So the question is, does the software ever become a replacement for higher end lenses?

I once had an electrical engineer tell me that anything hardware can do, software can do. He was referring to IC chips, but I'm sure at some point that will apply to photography, too. At some point, we will be using a cheap camera, with or without a lens, and all the enhancements will be through software. We're almost at that point now.

I had this feeling that I would Like to try more long exposure photos. I understand that use ND filters can help. I think I remember that the variable filters are not much but i see they are made by companies that have been recommended by mu UHH group. IF they are good the price and the ease of using just one filter sounds good. Give me some recommendions.

You only need one filter-- a 10 stop ND filter. As some have said, different brands produce a color shift. And price has nothing to do with it. Matt Ganger did a comparison of about 15 different brands. You can view that on YouTube. Very eye opening. From what I remember, the Breakthrough X4 came out the best.

Also, Lee filters has an APP out that automatically converts the shutter speed from No filter to 6, 10, and 15 stop filter. It is free in the Play Store or App store. I think it's called the Lee Stopper app.

A 15 stop filter is very good for capturing scenes with no people in it. I once photographed a scene that had many cars coming through and a 15 minute shot eliminated all the cars. It's also great for historic buildings where you want to eliminate people.

But again, the 10-stop filter is probably the most useful.

For Nikon users: if you were to buy a new camera body today(ignore any current price deals) which of the following would it be:

I have a D500 and both DX and FX lenses. Just want to add a full frame body. Do BIF with the D500 & 200-500. Looking for the ability of full frame to provide higher resolution and better low light/ISO capability. Really just like fooling around with these fantastic cameras and their capabilities . Body weight is irrelevant to me. Not sure I would need the 45mp capability of the Z7

I would go with the Z6 II. I, too, have the D850 and the D500, the Z50, and the Z6. Will sell most of the DSLR gear including lenses to get the Z6 II. The quick focusing and the sharp lenses for it have sold me.
