So, I entered this local Photography contest for a $2500.00 grand prize 1st place. I was watching it live from the "Live view cam" because we "the photographers" couldn't be there during the vote. and noticed a huge line of cars pull up all at the same time.
Getting to my point...
A lot of great photographers had submitted their work. And a new photographer this year had entered for the first time. That line of cars was all the family and friends of the "New Photographer" who's work really "SUCKS" by the way. Any who, they all got out of the cars and separated quickly because apparently they was told it would disqualify her automatically. A total of 86 votes on the worst photograph on the table. It had zero before they showed up. I came in second at 42 votes, and 3rd was a good friend at 19 votes. The way I see it, that photographer should have been disqualified after numerous photographers went and complained on the winning vote. Not one person from those vehicles even looked at the other art on the table it was a quick 1 go then the next go, even watching the first one go back and tell everyone where it was located on the table.

I am wondering what everyone else thinks about this? And if anyone can answer the question of why the judges couldn't rule her out do to the obvious situation?

Yeap the ballot box was stuff with all her F&F, she now goes home with the prize and get to show everyone her crappy photo for ever. They will feel they were supportive and she will feel hollow inside. Knowing that she did not win based on her ability, but by cheating.
At least lets hope so.
This also made the photo contest look like a joke, I would wright a letter to the sponsor (anonymously of course) and have all your F&F do the same complaining about the stuffing of the box, and ask them to look at thier rules.

Or you can go with the line of "life is not fair". or something like that, and never enter the contest again. Recoginizing that you can't win unless your a really good at ralling F&F.

Rachel! You've been a favorite of mine! I agree with everything you have said. Myself and most of the photographers have decided it's best to just leave it be as she has already taken the check. She may have cheated, but we are seeing it as "she has only cheated herself".

I agree, voting should by a qualified photographer and not friends of friends.

I suspect a revision of rules is coming before next contest.

True, very true! I have been thinking of not going back to this one again...

I know what it is like to feel cheated in a contest. I entered my county fair this past year for the first time after finding out about it in the paper. It is for amateurs only, which I qualify for because I don't sell my pictures. Also you have to mount your pics on 6x8 or 10x12 white poster paper or posterboard. I showed up and thought there were a few competitors but many of the pictures were matted on the wrong color paper or not matted at all. (The rules stated all pictures not following the rules would be disqualified.) To my surprise when I went back the next day to see the showing most of the pics that were supposed to be disqualified were the ones that took first and second places in every category. I was not happy, but I am going to do my best to get even better photographs for this next year and keep entering.

Wonderful picture by the way. Sorry you got cheated. Maybe some of the ones holding the contest will see what happened and change around the order so that there is judging by a panel of judges only or in addition to the popular vote to make it more fair to everyone.

That's what I like most about all of you! Keeping that positive attitude and not giving up! That's how we all learn to be better... Thanks for your complement on my photograph. I really appreciate it! I wish they would change it around but she received her check and the end of the judging along with a "Photographer of the Month" Plaque with her name on it. GRrrr... lol well anyway.

Unfortunately that kind of nepotism is nothing new in "Popularity" type contests. I only enter my motorcycles OR my photos in Juried competitions where knowledgeable people vote on the prizes. There is usually a "peoples choice" award too, but it is never the money prize, just a trophy or ribbon.

I like your image as it reminds me of a time and place I was fond of. I cannot judge your image on any other criteria.

I hope you did not really need the money.

Thank you... I understand you completely.
I don't know anyone who couldn't use an extra pocket full of money these days. Did I need it right away? No, my kids are still very young.

Thank you! That's my backdoor view and the result of renting a digger! I got very bored while I was out of work for a month...

Just curious. Did you have to fill out a lot of paperwork and have inspections done before you dug your pond?

A friend here in NY had swampy ground, and he wanted to dig it out for two large ponds. He eventually got approval, but it probably took a year before he could start the digger.

The first reply from you is very true!

This question, I live in Kansas. The only big issue is getting test done for lines and what not... but no paper work involved at all.

Great picture. The shadows on the pond and the trees too, great eye.

Thanks! I took my time on this one, I now wish I wouldn't have had the cement walk pored. I tried everything I could think of to get it out of the picture, the only other option is to edit it out with clone tool but it has became part of the picture now...

Here is the b/w copy I thought was great but the contest was "color" only.

I like to enter the County and State fairs. I placed 4th in the state fair last year. Was happy to place.[/quote]

I have never had the chance to get entered into something like this... It's great to be placed even if you didn't win 1st place, you still won in your heart!

I don't know if that is true or not, but it's something I am going to have to look into now... If so, then they all was cheating?

I agree it was a rotten deal. The young lady must live by cheating so it's probably became a clear conscience for her?

Thank you for your kind comment! I appreciate that! However, this contest only has one real winner 2nd and 3rd place only gets a "pat on the back" and "better luck next year". :/

This is why I do not enter local contests, they are not judged by photographers. Popular votes are for politics and figure skating. I want my worked to be judged by an expert in the field, who understands lighting, composition and technique.

I really do hope a revision is coming! This year has been a disaster...
