_SLL4828D American Bittern by Sherwood Lincoln, on Flickr

American Bittern medium-sized herons are considered an uncommon bird in my neck of the woods, but there are probably more around than we think; they move so slowly and have an incredible plumage camouflage. Their best defense is to freeze with their head pointed straight up. They can be standing 20 ft in the reeds and go unnoticed by all but the most discerning observer. Both sexes look the same. Thank you for taking your valuable time to view my photos. All photos are taken in southeastern Ct. most with a Canon 5DMIV or 7DMII and Canon 100 to 400II lens. Have a super fantastic day.

SL_L1471D Great blsck-backed Gull by Sherwood Lincoln, on Flickr

Great black-backed Gull. A supreme predator! Aside from eating the obvious all seafood (fish, crabs, clams), they also eat carrion. I have witnessed them kill and eat small mammals and small songbirds if they catch them over open water. Gulls are very adept at knocking birds into the water, drowning, and devouring them. If that isn't enough, they will steal from another bird's catch. It is no wonder they are a highly successful species. Thank you kindly for taking the time to view and make thoughtful and honest comments. I take my photos in southeastern
Ct.

SL_L0827D Hooded Mergansers by Sherwood Lincoln, on Flickr

A pair of male Hoodies. Fifty years ago, Hooded Mergansers would have drawn a crowd, but today they are quite common. If you are fortunate enough to find a small group doing their breeding dance, it is fascinating to sit back and watch. Have a super fantastic day. Photos are taken in southeastern Ct. with a Canon 5D M IV or 7D M II and Canon 100 to 400II. THANK YOU all.

SL_L0844 Male Hooded Merganser by Sherwood Lincoln, on FlickrA case for

I was lucky to get this shot on a calm day which gave me a clear reflection of this Hooded Mergansers; laying down would have been impossible to get this reflection, but I envy those who can lay on the ground. Hoodies nest in tree cavities near water. They will use Wood Duck nesting boxes if available and unoccupied. Have a super fantastic day. Photos are taken in southeastern Ct. with a Canon 5D M or II 7D M II and Canon 100 to 400II. THANK YOU.

_MG_1318D American Goldfinch by Sherwood Lincoln, on Flickr

Another American Goldfinch having a dust-up. Birds, in general, have squabbles continually over everything from; food, breeding, and territory. After countless hours of watching, I have never seen any harm done to each other... (birds of a feather, so to speak). Have a super fantastic day. Photos are taken in southeastern Ct. with a Canon 5D M or II 7D M II and Canon 100 to 400II. THANK YOU.

I think it looks like a grackle, but the colors don't match. I don't think the beak does either. So, here I am calling on the experts again. Thanks so much. :D:D

I also think it is a Rusty Blackbird. Euphagus corolinus.

Excellent image of the bird, but needs some space at the tail.

Thanks, Jim. I agree, but I cropped out an ugly Birdfeeder; I need to learn Photoshop!

SL_L0581DS Male Wood Duckss by Sherwood Lincoln, on Flickr

Male Wood Duck...Spring is the time when I see a variety of ducks that stop by my little lake before heading north to breed. Wood Ducks are one of the ones that stay and breed, and the garish-looking drake maybe my favorite. Have a super fantastic day. Photos are taken in South Eastern Ct. with a Canon 5D M or II 7D M II and Canon 100 to 400II.

While it definitely isn’t beach weather yet, the Chicago Park District has announced the city’s lakefront, playgrounds and indoor pools will reopen after they closed nearly a year ago during initial COVID-19 shutdowns in the Spring 2020.

Frozen Lake Michigan

At the time of these images on Saturday Feb 20, 2021, Chicago had experienced 12 straight days with more than a foot of snow on the ground. On Monday we completed a two-week period that is the city’s longest run with more than a foot of snow since the winter of 1978-1979. The winter average in Chicago a 5-inch depth of snow.

Frozen Chicago

The Chicago Fire Department uses an icebreaker to plow through Chicago River keeping the river open during temps at 0F or below.

Marina Towers

The Christopher Wheatley is 95-feet long and reinforced with steel and concrete, making it heavy enough to turn up to a foot and a half of ice into a jigsaw puzzle. The CFD slices the ice from Lake Michigan to Wolf Point where the river splits north and south.

_D1A4474D Evening Grosbeak by Sherwood Lincoln, on Flickr

My; what a big beak you have. An Evening Grosbeak can put up to 125 pounds of pressure with its bill; they can crack a cherry pit. A large flock of Evening Grosbeaks invaded my bird feeders; in minutes, they emptied them. There were so many I couldn't figure out which one to photograph. Thank you kindly. All photos are taken in South Eastern Ct. with a Canon 5D Mark IV and Canon 100 to 400I.
