minniev recently put together her Dam Bird Folly, which I enjoyed very much. My grand-daughters regularly ask me to put a fun image together for them, and it's along the same lines as minniev's effort.

I got to thinking about all my Halloween images and an idea hit me. So, using the masks/faces that the little goblins show up wearing, I've used up my morning putting together Halloween Hell. It's not as elegant as Dam Bird Folly, but I had fun. Hope you can enjoy!

Though I never recall all the steps I take, I think the main color impact was a layer of one of the jacked up Topaz Adjust color contrast/detail filters, masked to show mainly on the cars, then my usual NIK glamour glow on another layer. Once I got it kinda like I wanted, I duplicated it, blended it with multiply and masked it in at a reduced opacity just on the cars. Made the colors rich and shiny. I’m almost always experimenting. It’s never a direct route.

I never record my precise steps either, but you've given me a good idea of how it was done. Thanks.

You know I thought about it and I understand and agree. It's a good background. It needs something by the white tree. A focal point, a subject. Thank you so much for your comments.

Yes, and my first run at it would be to see if I could make the existing logs/stumps/branches do that job. But, pay me no mind! Establish your vision and the edits will come automatically. Have fun!

The hillside in the background, which is actually across the box canyon below, is one of my routes up into the high country. It takes some careful climbing and a good amount of effort, but the high meadows are wonderful and isolated.

I respect the isolation portrayed. How many human eyes have ever fallen on that tree? Great shot! Much appreciated!

I don't know that Beethoven would be inspired by my fanciful moonlight but I can hear the frogs croaking. Your comments are most welcome.

Glen Miller may be inspired! :-) I like except I lose any detail in top half. My eyes had a hard time finding a ‘starting place’, if that makes sense.

I’m intrigued with how you shined up that Caddy. I will nearly always have a “Spotting” layer that I use to ‘clean up’ an image. Seems there’s always something there that I don’t want.

I think it is a nice photo. He is clearly too big for that tricycle which is probably what makes the photo work so well.

I agree that those bright areas are distracting. There is a ton of character in that face and you captured that very nicely.

Thanks for your comments, Erich. Appreciated.

Another book I’ve been quite pleased with is NIK SOFTWARE CAPTURED by Cornell and Haftel. Still available, I picked up a slightly used copy off Amazon for less than $10 incl p&s a couple years ago.

I’ll check that out. Thank you!

Very nice, Bruce. He looks to be a mime.

Yes! On an old tricycle! I just thought he was cool. I typically take 750-900 pics during the trick-or-treat times.

Thanks for looking, Bob.

The real key to effective use of ANY plug in or preset, IMHO, is your willingness to modify it to meet your needs. There is seldom one formula that someone else invented that will exactly fit your target photo. That's why the best way, for me, is to use them on layers within PS, so I can control density, blending mode/options, masking, etc. Most modern filters have modification tools built in, and I do use those, but I fall back on the familiarity of PS's layering/masking system to give me the fine-tuning control I want.

I, too, use them on layers, for the same reasons.

Terrific, thanks Bruce! There's a Kindle version of one of the Nik books for just $5.99 here

edit - I just bought it. Sooo easy when you have one-click ordering + the Kindle reading app on your Chromebook

Yeah, almost too easy!! I pay Amazon a lot of money every month!

Great subject. I’m gonna pay attention here. I’ve owned Nik for a few years. Even updated to the DxO version, but I seldom use them. I should use them more. FWIW, there’s a British author named Robin Whalley that has written several books on how best to use the toolset.

Some water droplets from yesterdays shoot. Have to wait a while before I can do them again. I've had the dining room tore up for a couple of days. I'm not sure how far I can push my wife's patience with my mess.

Really neat stuff! I really enjoy what you're doing here.
