I have been taking photos and own a photography business a little over 5 years now. I enjoy learning new tips and tricks. There is so much to learn in this business from photoshop, sales, lighting, lenses and cameras. I can’t wait to share, learn and experience new things with fellow photographers.

Welcome to the UHH. I have learned a lot from this Forum. We look forward to your posts.

On my first try the images were blown out. This time I put the camera in A mode and selected f/11. Probably should have used M and jacked up the shutter speed too. Went +/- 1 ev in 1/3 stops. First shot thru the pine was about 6:30 PM and still light out. Second was about 2 hours later. 1) 1/640 f/11 ISO640 600MM cropped. Second 1/640 f/11 ISO 4500 600MM cropped. D750 body, Tamron 150-600 G2. We're learnin.

It's about a 2-hour drive to Sanibel, where the Ding Darling National Wildlife refuge is. Try to time your arrival with low tide. Also, a little south of Sanibel is the Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. Both highly recommended.

Agreed. Both are oustanding.

Would you believe ISO 8000? Raw files from the D850 lend them selves to processing. And I blew the exposure by several stops.

What noise?

For 5xxx and 3xxx cameras no meter or AF. The OP has a 5xxx camera so 7xxx info does not help.

Just saying which bodies can meter AI lenses.

Auto ISO doesn't work with Pre AI or AI/AI-S lenses.

Auto ISO works on my D750 body with all my AI lenses. I almost always shoot in A mode.

I don't own any Nikon Vintage manual lenses. But, I've been told the the consumer cameras, such as the D3xxx and D5xxx Series, do not have the Non CPU menu setup. Only the higher end consumer cameras have it. Is that true? And if so, how do you set it up on those cameras? And will an Ai/Ais lenses work on them?

True, the D3xxx and D5xxx series don't have the aperture sensing tab on the camera lens mount nor the NON CPU menu and therefore cannot TTL meter with non-cpu lenses. The D7100, D7200 and almost all FF bodies can use most AI or AIS lenses with TTL Metering in Manual or Aperture modes. You need to enter the Focal length and Maximum Aperture for each Non-CPU lens to be used in the Non-CPU list in one of the cameras menus ( IE 50mm f/1.4) then select it and shoot in A or M modes. You have to manually focus of course. I regularly use my 50mm f1.4, 85mm f1.8, and 105mm f4.0 micro AI Nikkors on my D750 body. Check the lens compatibility page on the Nikon website.

For crop frame Nikons you need a D7100 or D7200. Most FF Nikons can meter in M or A modes with AI lenses or AI modified lenses. I use 5 manual focus AI lenses on my D750 often. You need to put the Minimum aperture and focal length in the NON-CPU Lens list on one of the cameras menus for each lens to be used and then select it when mounting one on the camera. AI lenses have a ridge on the aperture ring which moves a tab on the camera body lens mount which communicates with the metering system.

I have a question about the 85mm 1.4, which my Nikon salesman also has. Why is a 1.4 needed on a portrait lens?

Bokeh, Depth of field control.

Im sorry, but this post makes no sense to me. If your goal is to shoot with the aperture "wide open", why use Av mode? Use shutter priority, and crank up the SS until you are there. Or do it with ISO adjustments. Controlling SS directly is way more important for fast moving objects than making sure your aperture is wide open.

So as to not be off topic, I think this post is bad advice (but in fairness, not the WORST advice). Av mode for birds...sure it can be done, but it falls short of best practices IMO.

Wow, look at those feathers. Is it the G1 or G2. Probably does't matter at 350mm. I got a G2 last October and love it.
