Thanks Todd!
I went ahead and bought a cfast card for it. My other cf cards are average speed. I've been using a 7D m2 and a 5DSR. I'll be selling the 7DM2 probably. I appreciate all the advice! What do you mostly shoot with your 1DX? I shoot high school sports for MaxPreps.com but will be relocating in two years to any area with more colleges and universities and hope to expand into that area too.

I have CF cards from my previous 1D Mk III, but use mainly the Lexar 128 GB CFast card I purchased with the 1Dx Mk II. I also have a 64 GB CFast card and reader that came with the camera. I can shoot about 5,000 full size RAW images on the 128 GB card. You need to use the new battery if you want to shoot at full 14 FPS. I have used my 1D Mk III battery when I know I will not be shooting 14 fps. I believe it drops to 10-12 FPS with he older battery. I would go with the Canon battery.... Don't skimp when you are spending that kind of money for a new body...

Best,

Thank you Todd. Been thinking I won't need the cfast card but will stick with the OEM battery based on advice I'm getting hear. I have cf cards too already, I'll just get faster ones and stick with that.

I don't have the mkll.
In my mkl I use SanDisk Extreme Pro. Most of mine are 64 GB because I share them with my 5Ds. I shot fast moving sports but rarely use the high speed, and if I did, only for 1/2 to one second. More than fast enough for me. I always shoot raw. If my publisher is at the event then I shoot JPEGS to one card for immediate download to his laptop.

I only have 2 batts, so far I've had no problems. You can always turn of the LCD or put the review time to 2 seconds and the power off time to 1 minute and Only review if you feel you need to. That will save a lot of battery. Usually every newer model gets more efficient power-wise. To bad they don't make the AA battery holder for it.

I've never spent more than 99 cents for a screen protector. Go to the 99 cent store and get a cell phone protector and cut it. Snip the corners so it can't snag.

Enjoy it, it's a lot of camera.
You want to do some really bad-ass work, get the 200 f2 to go with it!!! LoL

Great tips! Thank you. The 200 f2 is on my "someday" list. What do you mostly shoot, racing?

So, let me be sure I understand...

You plan to buy a $6000, 20MP full frame camera (and presumably some big, heavy, expensive full-frame-capable lenses to use on it) and you're concerned about spending $169 for an OEM LP-E19 battery. Is that correct?

Well, AFAIK, no one is making an LP-E19 clone... so you're probably stuck with buying an OEM battery for that camera.

Are you going to be shooting sports at a high, professional level? If not, have you considered a 24MP 80D ($1100) or 20MP 7D Mark II (which many pros use, $1550)... both of which are able to use a number of much smaller, lighter, less expensive "crop" lenses, as well as every FF lens made for Canon? Or, if full frame is really your "thing", how about a 30MP 5D Mark IV ($3300) or 50MP 5Ds-R ($3700)? Or maybe a 26MP 6D Mark II ($2000)? Just wondering. A side note... the smaller LP-E6N batteries all these models use cost $64 apiece for OEM... But there are various third party clones of them for $40 or less.

Memory cards... 1DXII has two slots: One for standard Compact Flash, the other for the new ultra big and fast CFast cards. Unless you want to spend a lot (128GB $350) for CFast, any quality UDMA 7 800X/10066X or faster Compact Flash card should give you very good performance for all but very long bursts done at the very highest frame rates. Shooting RAW with a 20MP camera, you'll get roughly 500 images per 16GB, so can select your cards accordingly. Personally I prefer to use a number of smaller cards (16GB and 32GB), rather than put "all my eggs in one basket" with a single, gigantic memory card. If a card is lost or fails for some reason, I'd hate it in any case but would much rather lose a smaller number from part of a shoot, than a really big card loaded with a full day or many days' work. Besides, it only takes a few seconds to swap out a fresh card. (I filled twelve 16GB cards with two 7D Mark II at a shoot last Saturday.)

Oh, and the LCD screens on most current Canon DSLRs are covered by "armored glass"... no screen protector is needed. In fact, those protectors are a bit of a pain in the arse. But, if you insist, apparently Vello makes one for 1DXII.

Thank you!
BTW how is the ISO at 6400 to 12800? I shoot high school football and was hoping to get improved results for that.

Check the owner's manual for memory card requirements.

I'll recommend OEM spare batteries.

Add a measure of carefulness and avoid the screen protector.

All IMHO, of course

Thank you

I'm going to be purchasing a 1DX soon. The questions I have are recommendations for the following-

Memory cards- I will not be shooting video and I might be shooting in RAW at times.
batteries- any good non canon battery I can use as a backup
Screen protector- recommendations

Any other great tips or recommendations for this model are appreciated! Thank you.

Like new Canon 100mm 2.8 macro. $375includes shipping to lower 48. Pay Pal accepted. Lens is in near mint condition and hardly been used. Comes with original box, caps, bag, and UV filter which was installed day of purchase. Lens has clear glass, no dust no scratches, mold, mildew etc. Had hopes to get into macro photography but got into sports instead :) Note, this is not the L version.

Been to Alaska on cruises twice now. Your best best is to use a 24-105 or something in that range and maybe a 70-200. Unless you have a whale watching trip planned you aren't going to need a large range zoom. You won't need a tripod or monopod either unless you want to lug that around. Here is a link to my portfolio if you are interested in Alaska. Just do a search in the search bar foe Alaska. Have fun!!

I'm sorry, I sold the lens, but yes, that would work on a Canon 40D. It would be more like a 100-270 zoom range on that camera
