note to self... get rid of teenagers... (being eating machines, they're always problems with them anyways!!!) besides they are incompatible with both canon and nikon camera's. :D :D :D

welcome!

as an ex-ny'er, i continually miss being able to "walk the city"... it's more like wandering because of the many stops and starts for pictures and looking. i am jealous.

so beyond the touristy stuff, just get out and look - pictures abound.

i was last there 1 1/2 years ago, made a picture of empire state bldg from brooklyn bridge, ( lotsa photo op' there too) - a nice shot framed by other bldg's. chinatown, the highline, washington sq park, manhole covers, the cloisters... people, people, people, (be a bill cunningham).

be in nyc next week, gonna hit icp, take the circle line and just wander... i'm looking forward to it.

Forget the Iphone, use the Canon, take about 20-30 pics. Use manual settings on the camera, ISO 100, f8, shutter speed according to light (somewhere from 1/200-1/500 should be possible) Use Microsoft Ice to stitch them together in a Panorama pic.

No need for tripod, keep the horizon always on the same place in the viewfinder. Use vertical position for the camera, overlap the pics, ca. 40-50%.

i agree with jpl - you CAN do this... i would make the fact that they are 20-30 pictures part of the allure - line up the horizon in the oix on the wall and let the rest fall where it may... you can do this....

they are also good for keeping plastic liner bags from slipping into the kitchen garbage can ("bin" for those across the pond).

take it from a high point in brooklyn/queens or nj... nj for sunrise, bk/qu for sunset.

also may want to do a search on panorama photography and get a couple ideas about how you might want to do it - image stitch in ps or collage them as was done in days past - which i like.

rakuten was formerly buy.com, which portrayed itself as an auction site like ebay for companies - as such they had a growing number of "sellers" - i imagine some of those were selling gray market goods.

These are the kind of Hands I absolutely LUV...
The color image is better only because of the B&W conversion...
Beautiful hand Pierre.

okay, i'm gonna have to unmask myself!!! i don't have a digital camera, ( i.m a "throwback" :) so i'm unclear about some digital stuff.

can you tell me why "because of the b&w conversion", it lacks punch, sparkle, and even seems to have less detail!!!

thanks.

(pierrre, i recently started a "hands" series - yours is nicely done!)

Everybody will provide you with great information. A word of caution (actually a bunch or words :-) ).

Ensure both the tripod and ball head, each, can support one and a half to two times, total weight of both the camera and largest lens you own.

everyone, as with camera's will have their favorite...

i bought mine after begging and probing other photg's to check out there's. i found i what traveler so succinctly stated important - also that i don't need/like/use the ball heads and gimbals so popular today - saved me a lot of money....

good luck

Processing black and white isn't that expensive to do yourself.
Hard to justify the chemistry if you do it only occasionally though.

you have a number of one-shot options that can make b+w economical, you can buy a daylight tanks on that auction site or c-list - the hardest part will be learning to load the film into it!

go for it!

Your camera is fine and the lens is not ideal but it can work fine.
From what I am seeing, everything looks over exposed and the focus could be better in some.

1. Always use a tripod for this type of work.
2. Use a neutral background -- one color, often black or white are used but any solid neutral would do.
3. Use natural light whenever possible.
4. If you can't use natural light, you may want to make a light box. This is basically a cube with white cloth sides to diffuse light. One side has a place to insert lens. Directions to make may be found on line or you may purchase. You use this with lamps or flash but they even and diffuse the light for better pictures.
5. Switch to manual focus and focus carefully. ....

using a tent (inside with flash or out, with natural light and or flash suplemental) - you can also construct one, very easily. i did this and shot fishing lures for a book - light box will make the difference...

what sheila said above!!!!!
