My final input to this subject matter: Since you are shooting birds, make sure your selector switch is in Continuous Auto mode. Check your Focus Area features-suggest shooting any moving subject in spot mode. This will give you a tack sharp image, also use the FOCUS & RECOMPOSE technique. Use Back-Button Focusing, don't change your position when you lock your subject focus. Adjust your joystick accordingly . Same approach applies to Single Auto-focus. Use the Tripod. Also switch to LV to check your image(s) for differences

Love the thread, points well made, one sees what one's perceive where photography is concern.

I never shoot images with my 70-300mm Nik, without using a Tripod.Great sharpness. However, handheld is a different issue. I use LV at all times. Send a note to Nikon support and solicit their input. Don't waste money taking anything to be repaired. Cleaning OK if needed...

One test no one seems to mention is, using LV (live View) and check the image sharpness on a tripod in auto mode then manual mode. Also adjust your eye optics on the camera to compensate for eye strain /light effects. Also shoot in Spot meter mode, USE A TRIPOD AT ALL TIMES. i HAVE A d7100/d3s/d300S FROM RELEASE INCEPTION WITH NO ISSUE with a multiple of lens. However I notice at times my eyes sight varies in sharpness in manual mode. Check out YouTube videos on this subject matter for input.

In response to A.T thread herein, I recommended the same lens, however I failed to state that I checked out Theo and his recommendation prior to purchasing the macro lens. As stated its a great macro lens with superb results and good price.
Lets kill this thread now, good info have been provided on the subject matter. NEW TOPIC?

For the price and optics. the Tokina 100 is excellent. I also used the Tamron 90. however for the past 3 years I used nothing than the Tokina. Why pay more for a brand name?

Added in: Always defrag your hard- drives once a month internal and external storage.. Connect to a power surge tool bar if the hard drive require it, as opposed to your USB port.
Forget about CLOUD STORAGE,manage your own storage environment.
Make a list of your own pros & cons and go for it
Dr.Alb
In response to this thread on storage. I have stored thousands of photo images on CDs over the years and they are still readable. I can open every CD. Same on external hard drives. My CDs are all makes. However the ones I hate are Verbatims. Why, never exceed the limited storage limit, or you will not be able to read the CD. You will need an App to read it. I store all of my CDs in containers in my basement. No issue with climate control. Oh, my PhD is computer science

Hello again Mary Fran: I like to keep things simple where my photography is concerned. Just an update. I am an IT professional for over 45 years. and a amateur photographer for 28 years with a long list of cameras and lenses during that period, with NIKON being me work horse (exclude other makes). I also have been using many post processing editors on my PC and MAC, and I shoot and process both RAW & JPEG images. For storage I use external drives as well as USB drives (16-32GB).
So buying an SSD drive will not solve your problem with respect to storage.Quite costly. Now with respect to post-processing saved data (EXIF) You are using Apple photo as your post-processing editor. Great. all of the processed info will be saved to an extension file attached to your JPEG image. To check this go to the Apple Apple store and down load the EXIF data app on to your MAC and check for the data. Just buy yourself an SEAGATE 2 TERABYTE EXTERNAL DRIVE AND COPY ALL OF YOUR PHOTOS TO IT from the MAC. As was suggester in this chain, setup folders on your mac for your images by date and locations, then copy those folders to your external drive. If you have a PC, install CORAL editor, not expensive and open your images to see your processed EXIF data etc..
Hope this helps
Dr.Alb
If you are shooting JPEG & RAW and only processing the JPEG files, then the RAW files will contain the EXIF data - non destructive. I have no problem moving my edited images from my MAC to an external USB and then to to my PC for CD storage.

I am a heavy nikon user, have loads of lenses, and three pro bodies. However, I have had past older Fuji cameras before. Why, because I loved their sensors.
Want a real walk-about great photo camera, then get the Fuji XH1. spend the $$ and call it quits on ever needing another camera. Else XT2
Dr.AlbertB
My choice is LUMINAR, I USE LR 5 AND WELL AS THIS, ALSO COREL 2020.
Go for any one
