for the life of me i can't remember the photographer's name but he was featured in an internet article recently & is supposed to be a highly respectable, well established name in headshot photography & he typically shoots headshots in horizontal format & commonly cuts off the top of the client's head. it's now like his trademark.

i have seen these and used it a few times from client requests.....just looks like a crooked photo to me....

and another thing...this new trend in cropping off part of the top of the head on a portrait???????...............i have had 3 clients in the last week come to me to get portraits without the tops of their heads cropped..as they received from my competition....

seems like everything is trying to replace anything that is or was standard.

i sure don't mind change, but some of these "trends" are pretty lame....but it's up to the client.

Please send me a private note regarding the photo of the cheeta and the antelope. I say they are cuddling. My daughters say the cheeta is eating the antalope. Please settle this dispute for us. Thanks. annemarie

I'll be glad to, but how do I send a "private" note on UH ~ my computer literacy is somewhat limited

This is Emma, my niece. I was taking these of her at the park and when I am trying to hit a moving target without time for adjustments, I fall back to the auto mode  I worked on these a little but wonder if I can even call them portraits or mostly still snapshots

I am on a cross country trip from North Carolina to Soldotna, Alaska. Have taken quite a few pictures of mountains, typical tourist.
Does anyone have any tips on how to avoid blown out mountains, & dark foreground.
I am getting pictures of faded looking mountains, & dark trees. It is very frustrating. I appreciate any help you can give me.
Thanks
Maggie

ok, one item i think you may benefit from that isn't too costly is a GOOD top quality circle pol filter (polarizing). but only get a top quality filter, no cheap junk. read up on pol filters 1st & see if you think it's something you may use. the difference in color saturation is astonishing.

I recently got into photography about ok3 months ago, when i purchased a T2I which was in my price range. It came with a carrying bag 2 batteries and 2 sim cards and one stock lens a EFS 18-55. Im really not sure what items I should purchase next (Essential items that is) I would like to purchase a zoom lens but have no idea what would be a good choice. I take lots of outdoor shots of nature, my dog competing in agility and pretty much anything that takes my fancy. I never really realized what i was truly missing in nature and my surrounding life until i got into photography and now see the world in a very beautiful new light. Things i took for granted or never looked at before suddenly have me photographing them. and admiring them and wondering how i missed it all before the camera. I so wish i had started this many years ago.

not a pro here by any stretch of the imagination but i'll put in my 2 cents(voluntarily) lol. go with the shorter zoom, av priority, low to mid range f-stop, carefully choose an uncluttered background thatyou check with your dof preview, try to re-schedule the time of the shooting to later in the day than mid day & hope it's an overcast day preferably, make certain your focus point is on the eyes then recompose your shot, bone -up on several good & appropriate poses for your subjects, & if you
re still worried about success, bracket each shot. good luck & have fun.

I guess next time I should make clear my intentions of "Charging" as to being "Voluntarily Compensated". Shooting for friends and family as opposed to shooting for strangers or "Paying Customers".

I am very limited at this time as to my selection of lenses and know that neither of the ones I currently have are best for shooting portraits. I do realize that an 85mm f/1.8 would be a much better lens for this type of photography, however, until that oportunity comes through, I will be doing the best I can with what I have.

Two problems: 1. Too many people take photos of people for various illicit reasons. They aren't always perverts -- some just do stupid things like post photos of people on the web and attach their heads to unflattering bodies -- they consider something like that fun. There are a few perverts out there also.

2. Young adults & older teens just don't have time for anyone over 30. The old adage "don't trust anyone over 30" has somehow taken a spin to "people over 30 are just insignificant". They just don't want to give up time they can spend with friends or texting friends to work with a photographer. I'm in a photo club and over the past few years we have had more models agree to come to our annual model night and simply not show up than have actually shown up. Our club meets in the basement of a local church, has been around since 1937, and is well respected in our community. Still we have trouble getting models. One thing we have done is contact local acting groups from high school, college, or local theater and this has worked well for us in the past. Good luck!

I don't use models but if I did, I would make sure to set them at ease by telling to bring friends or family members with then. If you are married, you might have them contact your wife for an appointment. Also, I would never be left alone with a model. Always, look out for the model's safety and your own.

thanks a lot. i appreciate the names of those sites.

Model mayhem can be hard to get accepted, try one model place or muse cube or a dozen different ones. Just do a search for modeling sites on google. Also take a look at meetups. Go to meetup.com and put in your area, and what your looking for and see what comes up. One of the ones i'm a member of does a shoot a month with models and different themes. Lastly put an ad on Craigs list. This is a last resort but i've found some real talent there but it's rare.

yes, i have heard of model mayhem but i think they require that you submit 3 photos of 3 different models that you've shot & from those, they judgewhether or not they will allow you into membership.

i am not sure if you know about this site, but it is called model mayhem. http://www.modelmayhem.com/ you can setup a free account and you can search for models in your local area or surrounding area. a lot will work for trading for photos, some want money, and some in my opinion should not be on there. you may want to take a look.

try telling them that it is not a matter of not photographing well they just need a good photographer. a little praise as to their good looks before you ask may also help. people generally will do a lot of things if you butter them up first. best of luck.
