Hey, holier than thow, read the last six or seven posts back to me from this clown before you fly off the handle.

Na I don't need to read back the posts to you because of your attitude on here. Holier-than-thou eh! you just can't help yourself can you. Why are you here anyway to insult other members by calling them clowns and old farts. If you don't agree with what a member has posted, then give a constructive criticism and say how you would go about the work. If you haven't got that knowledge then sit back and watch what the people who have the knowledge have to say, that is how you learn.

You are just too much fun. You give terrible advice, but fun. At least I give advice that works. Yours is awful.

Well said Captain. It's always the same, those with a limited knowledge of a subject nearly always end up insulting the person who has the knowledge, it's their only means of having the last word. It usually backfires on them.

DFCHEIF7 in hiding. Here we go again when the Hog stoops to the Ugly part of it's title. You may disagree with what has been said in a post. Especially when you cannot differentiate between the word competitors in a business situation and the word competition. It's a pity that you feel you have to insult a fellow member because you happen to disagree with his ideas and what he has written. The Hog is a place where like minded people gather to further their photographic knowledge in problem solving, equipment advice, and to learn new techniques. Keep your insults for somewhere else, if you haven't got anything constructive or instructive to say then don't answer the post

Those who don't want to learn from the old masters will live out their photography careers wishing they could produce quality work like the old masters. They will spend thousands of dollars on equipment and still wish their portraits were as good. Learn all you can and never stop learning. And when someone compliments you and desires to be as good as you, teach them, for eventually, you will be the old master others desire to be.

Well said Robert in total agreement. As in any trade you have to complete your apprenticeship. Where you learn your trade from someone who has years of experience. Photography isn't just about pressing the shutter button. how many members would the Hog have if we were still using film. Since digital came in it has been all to easy to think that we don't need to bother with looking at what the Old Masters had done and when I say Old Masters I also mean Old Masters of Photography. I served my apprenticeship With a three year degree course in University and a two year course at college Doing Photo Journalism. I have been on a learning curve ever since. I am at present Trying out street photography utilizing my Compact camera with my Canon Speedlight 430EX as the slave. I have had some really good results. I have also in the last few years been getting into Landscape and now sell what I take. I have posted several on the Hog with with Favorable remarks. So always learning it never stops.

OK, I give up. Yep, just go do your own thing. Of course you still have no idea WHAT you are doing and you will think your failures are successes since you have no baseline to judge from, but sure, forget studying the old masters, forget trying to emulate good work and learn from it.

Don't you DARE look at good work at try to figure out how it was done - what a waste of time! Flailing around in ignorance is just the ticket.

Babe ruth struck out 300O times. So what? ANY good athlete has coaches and those coaches and that athlete KNOW what good form is. They know the basics and know them well. Not one of them is dumb enough to be "doing his own thing."

I am going to urge all my competitors to follow dfchidf7's advice, I think it will be perfect for them.

Your are correct. Why bother?

Because you do bother. For everyone out there wearing dark glasses with their ipod ear buds in, there are twice as many who want to learn. That's why you bother, else you wouldn't be on here.

Well...actually, copying someone else when starting out is a great way to learn. As you get better, you will develop your own style.

One of the best groups to copy is the old masters - study the paintings and try to copy their lighting.

Copy lighting from tutorials or books to learn the basics. Just "being your own creation" without an understanding of the basics is just flailing around. Once you understand the principles of basic lighting and get an idea of what makes pleasing light ratios and understand what short/broad/split lighting is and why you would use which one, THEN deviate from the "rules" but now you know what you are deviating from and why.

Hi Barb and GoofyNewfie, Well still editing. Funny you should say that you have Just celebrated Burns's Birthday. I have an apartment in Dumfries where Burns lived Im only two minutes walk from his house. The reason I have a 9am start Friday is the beginning of the Big Burns Supper a huge festival of art and Music in venues all over the town. Friday evening is a celebration of his poetry and music in the Pub where he used to drink. His rooms are still there and kept as they were when he was alive as is his chair table and glass. You can request to see the rooms when you visit the pub it's called the Globe inn. He is also buried here in St Michael's Church where there is a mausoleum dedicated to him in white marble. In most of the Inns he frequented he would scratch poetry on the windowpanes with his diamond ring there to see today. I could go on but I'm getting tired. No Barb I don't live in the castle but I have access to it as it is my Clan Home. My friend lives opposite the castle. If ever any of you wish to make the trip I would be honored to be your guide and help you with such things as accommodation and travel. Some more pics. I would be more than happy to join you. And no, I don't think you're nuts, just dedicated. I've been known to spend many a freezing early morning (up at 4AM) to get a shot myself
Some places are a little scary (near transient camps) but in the winter at that time of the morning, they aren't usually much of a threat. I should probably stash a sgian dubh in my sock for insurance.

I'll send you one over but maybe a Sgian Dubh would be to small they are only for skinning. I'll send you a Dirk far more useful. Bigger than a Bowie Knife and double edged weighted to throw and land blade first ouch! Who would want to take on a Highlander Sgian Dubh in his sock Dirk on his chest Claymore on his back and no underwear scary stuff. On the Edinburgh Tattoo the guy doing the commentary said The Scottish Soldier doesn't march he walks with purpose. I think you got a lot more than a "half decent" photograph!

I avoid the word professional on ths site, but to answer your question, yes, I am legal, and do have a photography business of wedding photography, but do portraits and events as well. Yes, I have federal ID numbers and state tax numbers, and have to file as a pro. Would I still get called a hack by some.... sure. My clients love what they get (or so they tell me, and so do their friends when they book with me) Some of the people on here tend to get upset instead of just leaving a post they don't like. I still love to read and learn from people like Capt'n C (I've been in the biz for over 30 years, but am humble enough to know that I'll never know it all....although Capt'n C is close as it gets in my book)

bkysr why do you not use the word professional, a hack you may be in your eyes to your clients you are a pro. In an earlier post someone remarked, why hobbyist was a dirty word on the Hog. Well to be honest I think it's the other way round without using the P word people who make a living from photography are the minority on the Hog. We are all enthusiasts Pro or Hobbyists and all can learn from the Hog, otherwise there is no reason for us to be on here.

Hi Barb, why don't we do a house swap, you come here I go there he he. So glad you have decided to stay with us on the Hog. If you want any questions answered just PM here and I will do my utmost to answer them to the best of my ability. I already mentor a lady from Texas she has come on leaps and bounds in the short time I have known her. I will enclose a few more pics, the first was my Christmas card to the Hog members, just to show I am used to snow. The second is my avatar pic which shows my home village of Kippford one road in same road out. the third shows we have big fish here as well as Alaska. Cheers for now Brian
