When I was walking my dogs along the shoreline last night, I noticed some cool white dead flower stalks that I wanted to use in a foreground against the lake. By the time we got home, it was too dark to go back there with my camera, so we went this morning. The light was really blowing out the shots on the horizon, so while I waited for the light to get better, I kept busy taking some other shots.

The flowers are fantastic. The balloons are great too, keep an eye out for more.

Check with the local library or historical society. They may have books or collections of prints from your town. The library should have some books from the depression era with B&W photos of small towns life. Also, see if a friend or someone in the local car club is restoring a period car. They may be flattered to join in the project by having their cars in the picture.

Although your final prints will be in sepia you have to think black and white when taking the pictures. You want good contrast: solid blacks, clean whites, and even gray tones. Use a tripod. Bracketing the exposure will help save time when you get into the editing phase.

Actually I just wanted to get rid of the distracting highlights

Thanks JR. A small change but a big difference. I did not even notice those highlights. Good job sharpening, what technique did you use?

JR, Thank for the critique. Yes, you have my OK to alter the image...this is a forum to discuss photography and share ideas. It's how we learn.

BTW, this guy was shot through a thick, dirty, plexiglass barrier which is causing a bit of flare, but it kinda works here.

sometimes a polarizing filter will help. Or polarizing filter material for the light source.

Your first picture has a certain 'Audobon' feel to it. Great pattern in the feathers. Good set. Where in Florida?

Well if I'm at a crowded event and a stranger asks me to hold his camera with an extra large lens while he uses the bathroom, I'm outa there!

group photos will be inside and out. I prefer outside with the natural light. I believe there are 6 plus the bride and groom and two children. So 10!

Also there will be family photos of who knows how many. I've always opened up the aperture. For groups I will probably use the tripod. They come out cleaner.

I will be practicing tomorrow of course and try different settings. It's just that when the focus changes on me from where my focal point is set, some of the ppl on the edges gets slightly blurry.

Switch to manual focus...CLOSE the apeture down f/8 - f/16. Find the Depth of Field preview button and use it. Set up some soda cans and practice.
