I have the contemporary version of the Sigma 17-70 f/ 2.8-4 for Nikon. It's an excellent lens, sweet spot for it is 20-50 mm and it's softest at 17. DxO does rate the 17-50 2.8 more highly than the 17-70. but if budget is a concern I wouldn't hesitate for the 17-70
