excuse me for being a tad ignorant, but what is HDR? I really like the looks of all of these pictures!

High dynamic range. There are many books on the subject, and at least three software packages that do them (PhotoShop, Photomatix and Nik HDR Pro).

When you do your first one, you will say to yourself something like "This is really ugly - why did I start?"

By the time you do your tenth one, you will be hooked.

There is another solution if you don't want to use LV. This one also works very well if you are using a wide-open aperture like f1.2 or f1.4.

Replace the original equipment focusing screen with an etched one. That will give you a visible "target" that comes together when the lens is in proper focus. I use a KatzEye focusing screen on a D300s with great results at f1.2. It looks very similar to the focusing on an old rangefinder camera.

To do a one-shot HDR from a RAW image, would I use the exposure slider to create, say a +1 and a -1 stop exposure, save each as a separate photo, then combine those two with the original exposure? In other words, do I have to save three photos then combine them to make this work? I have done the conventional HDR, but this one-shot thing interests me.

Yes, you have it correct. My first image in this string was done that way, although I used five saved photos at -2, -1, 0 +1 and +2. If you are using Photomatix, it will give you an error message stating that all of the exposures are the same. Just ignore the message and it will do it just fine.

This is a pretty good chart. It recommends a minimum of 150 pixels/inch. In my experience, you can probably go to 120 before starting to look "pixelly". Depending on cropping specifics, you will be around 90 pixels per inch with a 10 meg image at 28x44. It will look pixelly.

Even a 12MP image will still be less than 100 pixels per inch.

If I wanted to fill this frame with one image, I think I would borrow someone's 18MP camera. The other thing you might try is a three panel panogram. That would work even with your 10MP sensor.

First a question - is HDR for real or a fad?
Than an example - let's see a fun HDR.

Three images of a rose at Hampton Palace in London. The first includes trellis wires and brick nails, the second is cleaned up and the third is "oil painted"

Are you using the original focusing screen? At f1.2 or f1.4 most AFs are marginal at best. If you want to use the aperture that open frequently you should consider an etched focusing screen and manual focus.

Nikon or Canon - it's personal preference. They're both very good. I've been using Nikon for 40+ years and couldn't afford to replace all my lenses, so I'll stay with them.

If you have friends that use one or the other and you want to share or borrow lenses, that would be a reason to choose that brand.

Nikon has announced a new policy where they will not sell service parts to independent camera shops after some time this summer. If they follow through with that, you will end up having to send your camera in to some authorized service center. If I were starting out new, that would probably be sufficient reason for me to choose Canon.
