The 50mm f/1.8 is a nice prime lens. Congrats on getting the 70D. Very nice camera, especially if it's a starter camera for you. The 35mm f/1.4 USM L is a nice prime too. The lens I'd like to rent is the 50mm f/1.2 USM L. Good luck.

Mdorn,
Thanks for the advice, I'll thinks about the lenses you mentioned. I've got a list going and I always like to research before anything I do.
Thanks again,
Laura

Any photographer pro or not, would have a 35/ and or 50 prime in there kit, I personally prefer the 35 over the 50. Mainly because most go to lens is the nifty fifty, i tend to go down the road less traveled, when photographing objects it tends to give a miniature look/feel, unique i think, As far as renting goes, Your only looking at. 200/250 for either the 35 or 50 , no sense in wasting. 100 on a rental.

Tjgphoto,
Thanks for the advice, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I haven't decided what to do yet, I need to let everyone's thought soak in. Hopefully I'll take your and some others comment to heart and save a little money.
Thanks again,

For a 70D I'd rent either of the following:

EF 35mm f/1.4L
EF 135mm f/2L

As mentioned by others, these are 4-figure lenses that a rental will give you sense of their outstanding capability and might also give you the confidence, if needed, to purchase used and drop that sales price maybe down to 3-figures.

The 50mm f/1.2 has mixed reviews that seem to be related to how difficult it is to focus at the maximum aperture. The mixture of 'awesome' to 'I hate it' reviews have stopped my own interest where there never seems to be any deviation on the 35 (85) 135 series of L-lens primes.

For recommendations, I use LensRentals.com. They have a discount if your rental starts on a Tuesday. You can schedule today for something that starts after the first of the year.

Additional thought - I went back and read more of the discussion and I see my suggestions probably don't address the request for ideas within a budget ... See if you can find a good (like less than $180) price on a EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. This lens is from 1996 and won't be available for a rental but it's an excellent performer. A great 'everyday zoom' that will compliment your 50 f/1.8.
For a 70D I'd rent either of the following: br br... (show quote)

CHG_CANON,
Thanks for so much valuable info. I'm going to write down each lens, do a little research and go from there. I appreciate the time and effort that went into such a detailed response. I feel lost and not confident at all, I don't like feeling this way because I'm usually pretty confident when trying new things but this is different for some reason. What amazes me is places will rent such expensive equipment to total strangers. I know they take credit info, but still. I'm eager to try a different lens just to see what's available and decide what my next purchase will be, I'm a bit impatient that way.
Again, thanks for the info and the site where I can rent from. Your post was great.

Some camera stores will apply the rental price to the purchase if you do so within a short time period. That way the rental price is never wasted - either you get credit for it, or you learn that the lens rented is not suitable for your purposes.

Thanks for responding. I'm actually going to the store where the camera was purchased tomorrow and find out if they rent lenses. I believe I saw it on their web page so I'm going to try, worst thing they can say is no.
Thanks again,
Laura

Not sure if this store carries camera's or not Artcraft camera and Digital....it is in the Kingston Plaza, cant tell by the stores web-site if they do or not, but one would think that by the name that they do...phone number 845-331-3141....Im not giving it a recommendation ,as I have never been to it myself, just that you are in Kingston and so is this store...could be worth a phone call :)

Hi Tom,
That's actually where I purchased my 70D body and lens. They are great and have been very patient with me, I stop in and ask questions. I'm actually planning on stopping in there tomorrow to inquire about renting, it's funny you chose that store rather than the box stores.
Thanks,
Laura

Thanks for your comments. I've written down each lens you refer to and will do my homework to learn more about them. That's how I've been choosing lenses for my gotta have and wish list.

Canon 15-85mm - One of the best APS-C lens for every day use.

Thanks for the lens suggestion. I've actually read much about that specific lens and would be interested in trying it out. Can you recommend any place specifically I should deal with when renting a lens, funds are tight but would enjoy the experience.
Thanks again,

Pentony,
Thanks you so much for that lesson on prime lenses, I totally grasp the difference now due to your clear and concise explanation. I'll do what you said and not worry about a new lens and enjoy what I have currently.
Thanks again for your time and advise.

Hi, Laura. I've been staring at the screen for about 15 minutes trying to fathom whether "nice prime lens" and "reliable everyday lens" belong in the same question.
None the less, given those criteria, I would recommend a fast (low f number) 35mm or 50mm. But what lenses do you already have?

OddJobber,
I probably should not have used those two phrases in the same question, I'm new here and trying to understand everything at once is difficult. I have a 70D with a 50mm f/1.8. Either I am completely lost and don't understand the capabilities of the lense or should have gone with another for my first, but I read a lot about how it was a good everyday lens. So I'm asking more specifically, could you or anyone recommend another everyday lense until I'm more comfortable with my camera?
Thanks in advance, any advice would be highly appreciated.
Very confused and lost Laura

BTW, love your quote, my life's about the same except my life is a world wind of confusion.q

Laura..Dont to excited for me..I just found them two years ago. Mother died in 08 and my sister doesn't want to see me.

Hans,
I'm sorry, I misread about your mother, and I'm very sorry about your sister. Maybe too painful for her, don't know. My mom's going through something very similar and there are relatives on her birth mothers side who will not communicate with her without reason.
Happier note, did you choose the camera yet? Can't express how much I love my 70D. Have a great day!

Hi everyone,
I'm interested in renting a nice prime lens to see if I'm interested in purchasing one in the beginning of the year. I have a Canon 70D and I'm interested in an everyday reliable lens. Also are there any recommendations of who to rent through? I'd like to have it over Xmas so figure at least a weeks rental.
Thanks in advance,
Laura
