It's my first post on The Gallery. It is a favorite rose, Abracadabra, which blooms very quickly and doesn't last very long in 100 degree weather. (Oops, forgot to store originals on the first few I think. Hope it doesn't matter.)

Thanks, all, for the welcome! I have already ordered the exposure book (Peterson) and am looking at the different forums.

I am retired. I have been a bird watcher for many years, somewhat scornful of bird photographers until 4 years ago when I decided I would learn how to take bird photos myself. A wildlife biologist in the field recommended a Canon SX50 back then and I was very happy to use auto mode and quite happy with my new camera. Then, I decided to take a photography class. It turned out it was more for intermediates than beginners and there I was, the only one with a bridge camera, everyone else with a DSLR. I stuck out like a sore thumb and as usual for me, felt very inferior. So hubby got me a Nikon D3300 toward the end of the class and that was also the end of my auto mode days. I realized "shooting" birds was quite a bit harder than roses, which never, ever flew away. Exposure confounded me and in some situations, still does, although I am doing much better with it.

I got a Nikon 70-300 lens but found it wasn't bringing things close enough. We did some research and I got a Nikkor 200-500 lens which is amazing as much of my photography is done on auto tours. Carry it around is out of the question for me though I am not a small person. Somewhat later, I got a bug about the P900 and had to have it. This one is a real challenge for me. I initially thought I'd use it for vacations but I have been trying to use it with birds and wildlife. Only recently have I began to get some images I am happy with.
So, I will be quite boring to a few of you experts and perhaps you could avoid my posts instead of being impatient and grumpy with me. At least, as first! After all, we were all new at this at one point.

I have lots of questions but won't add them here except to say that no where have I seen info on the best size of photos to post here, size limitations, and such. Right now I am doing jpg's but will probably move to raw in the future. I figured I needed to get a bit better before I could justify the huge file sizes. I will try to attach a few of my photos.
