The 2nd link is magic. My ol man would be wetting himself if he saw that! Managed to do the DURANGO narrow gauge ride last year and that was pretty good but all my photo's from there are, sadly, at the bottom of the Pacific.

I've heard about this BINDER malarky but I'm not fully understanding it. Would anyone care to elucidate?

My first digital camera (6/7 years ago) was a Fuji S5100 with a 10x zoom and 4mp. Still use it occasionally (and like it) but it is slow on startup and picture taking compared to todays models. Our son had one too, a 3mp that took better pictures though that broke down after 4 years.
My first SLR was a Fuji ST801 and I think it is the best camera I've ever ad. Nothing wrong with FUJI.

I'll revise that statement - most mini's are made at Cowley, Oxford.

I took this for no particular reason, but I'm quite pleased with the result. This was shot on my little NIKON AW100 waterproof action camera. Sometimes it surprises me with what it is capable of. Comments please.

Taken at the little tea and cake shop by Hurley Lock, River Thames, UK, a regular destination for the local canoe clubs Sunday social paddle.

If you can go a little shorter on the telephoto try the CANON EFS 15-85. Goes great on my 60D.

i agree with donrent can you post them in there orginal format-i am not a great lover of hdr -your shots look great

Make that 3 of us. I would love to see the originals. They look like they would be beautiful without the HDR processing. Cheers.

4, Just can't see the need for HDR here of all places, not that I'm much impressed with HDR anyway.

Thanks Kiwi, it became apparent early on that cost was a factor but your answer explains why that cost differential occours. Just to make it absolutely clear to this analogue brain of mine I assume that when you are talking about yeilds you are refering to complete working chips rather than working pixels on a chip?

So here are the judges scores and comments as relayed to me by my neighbour and fellow club member - I was enjoying a week in Devon the night the judge called.
In summary I think members views generally reflect the judges view. Scores are out of 20, and may have been marked more sternly had the competition been open to other clubs.

The Nature reserve:
Very difficult to take a good picture with such high contrast but commented that you did very well with the exposure.
Path leading into the light was also good composition. Some blown highlights where the light hits the bushes at the back of the picture but that can be forgiven considering how difficult it is. Suggested you may want to crop more on the right hand side to reduce possible distraction from the Green leaves. Scored 17.

Rob @ Marlow:
Good exposure, everything in focus, nice colours, timed the picture well to get expression in Rob’s face.
Suggested you have more space on left to allow subject to move into. Scored 18

Oban:
Good composition, exposure and DOF. Suggested showing less of the sky (others in the room disagreed during the tea break). Scored 18.

My views. All 3 photo's came out with a slight CYAN cast (so I'm told), but also with a scratch so I got them free.
The NATURE RESERVE print addressed some of the comments raised in the forum.
Rob @ Marlow is my son and Mrs. N. is delighted with this. It's difficult to get his face in anything!
OBAN - Everybody needs a POSTCARD shot, that's why they sell so well.

Thanks all.

I'd guess this has more to do with atmospheric inversions and stuff like that. You are seeing a mirage.

I entered my first print competition the other week. Just an in-club affair scored by an external judge, I was happy with my scores but it would be reasonable to expect slightly harsher scoring had the competition been open to a wider field.

I'd like to hear the opinions of a wider audience so I'm inviting comments from UHH members.

I can post the judges scores / comments later if people wish.

We had an interesting talk last night on lens basics, delivered by a member who knew his stuff - this was no read over the powerpoint slide effort - and he went on to explain how the cropped sensor affected focal length of lenses etc.

What I should have asked at the time, but didn't, is why do we have cropped sensors at all? Given that in the early days of popular digital photography the main problem seemed to be fitting pixels on the sensor I'd have thought the obvious choice would have been to stick with a 35mm equivalent sensor.

Can anyone proffer an answer.
