What is a snapshot. To me it is a shot that was taken on the spur of the moment. There is nothing wrong with that, and there may be something great in it.
You saw, you were ready and you captured the moment. That moment will never happen again, but you were able to capture it.
Is it a great image. Maybe. I have a few that I think are very good. They are keepers.

Just imagine when word got out that the President of the US was buying and collecting your images. What would happen?

A photograph is a moment in time. That moment may be special to you, your family or to a whole group of people. Most of my images are special to me.
If you have your camera ready and you are able to capture a special moment of history then you may become famous for that one image. Not for your whole body of work.
Take the beauty that is yours and enjoy what you are doing.

In my film days all of my great shots were accidents.
If I got one or two images out of 36 I felt I was doing pretty well.
Today I know before hand if the shoot is great or not. I will still take the shot just for the memory, and I know I will never print them.
I think the statement that get too a lot of us is..."that looks like a postcard"
I prefer "that looks like a painting............

The old saying is that "beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
At this stage of the game/my life the important thing is that I am pleased with the image and will print it and let other enjoy.
One of my problems is that I just returned from a shoot in Yosemite and have over 20 great shots. What do I do with 20?
answer is that I email them to interested people.
To thy own self be true.............

Learning is an adventure. Make it fun.
Look into Nik software. i love it. i purchased all 5 programs and use them every day.
They are a plug in for CS5 and lightroom.
To me they are magic. Such fun and easy to use. They can be downloaded for a 15 day free trail.

I have a good tripod and ball head. Was in Yosemite on a shoot and was placing my 5d mk 11 on my tripod and wasn't paying attention and it wasn't seated properly and down it went.
Moral of the story is that S--t happens.
My Canon is now on the way to be repaired.

Don't get me wrong. You are doing a good job. Sometimes a little is better.
Zone 1 means the amount of black
zone 10 is the amount of white.
In hdr you try and get information from all 10 zones.
Just keep doing what you are doing and the bottom line is that you like what you are doing.

I love doing hdr and I believe they can be over done. I like your shots but I could back off of the hdr effect a bit and see what you think.
The great thing about hdr is to pick up information from zone 1 and zone 10. then create the best image you can.
If someone looks and knows that it is an hdr image it may be the time to back off a little bit.

I had a 1g card and in raw I could get 23 images and in jpeg I could get 127 images.
This can give you some idea of the amount of compression that takes place in jpeg.
There are times to shot RAW i.e when you are going for fine art.
There are times to shot jpeg i.e snapshots.
The beauty of digital is that you can pick the format that you require.

I use my tripods as much a possible. I spend more time composing the image then I do with out one.
Not only is the tripod important but the proper ball head. You must have one that will support your heaviiest lens/camera.
A tripod that does not support the camera is worst then no tripod.
I would give your daughter either a gift cert. or the money and let her pick her own.
