I have a hard time with Photoshop and have heard a lot about GIMP. Does anyone use it and would you recommend it? Do you have any other recommendations? Thank you.

I started with Abobe 7 and it took awhile to learn, now using CS6 and still learning.
Get a book and experiment!! you can do it !!

I believe the screw threads into the pivot arm. You can try using heat on the arm but you might ruin the finish. Just heat the arm. Heat would cause the metal to expand and should loosen it.

I doubt if it is a left hand thread, I don't see any advantage to that.

Jim D

I agree no reason for left hand thread.
IM sorry I misread the O/P thought it said set screw ( allen head). THe mfg. may have use Loctite thread locker, acetone may release it without heat.

Here is your challenge for the day. Who's buried beneath this small unmarked headstone?

From the age of the stone and the clue I would say President Lincoln

Can anyone tell me how to remove the Philips head screw securing the vertical adjuster knob? Gepe responds to my question, but service is off a few weeks. I had no luck with an impact driver, so I'm guessing it may either be left hand thread or epoxied/ welded(?) on. My purpose is just to clean, lube and maybe measure various parts.

It seems a sturdy unit, BH sells it. Arca plates fit with no problem. I won't be able to test it much until the spring when I get back from work overseas.

If all else fails and you MUST remove the set screw, try carefully drilling a hole slightly smaller inside the socket this may relieve the pressure. But I would send it in for cleaning and / or repairs, by using this method you may damage the bearing surface.
If you think there may be a thread locking compound (Loctite) used try applying acetone to the screw this may soften the (Loctite).
Use either of these methods at YOUR OWN RISK!!!

I'm an amateur and have a new Canon EOS1100D. Now that I can focus manually if I choose, I'm wondering how eyesight affects my ability to focus well. I wear glasses for reading, but not when taking photos. Any ideas on this? Has it been raised before?
Thanks, Jude.

At 74 my eyesight is not as good as it once was, I use manual focus 99% of the time mainly for macro, Now how I focus is adjust both directions and watch for the sharpest image "MY" eye sees. Make sense?
For landscapes and studio work I use auto focus.

In another post on tripods a forum member stated he would only own a tripod with 3-section legs, but did not elaborate further.

I assume he feels 3-section legs are sturdier than the 4-section legs.

I would like some opinions/expertise on this matter, re: comparison of a 3-section tripod and a 4-section one, given equal weight capacity/quality value. To keep it simple I would think the best comparison be between models of the same brand.

What I'm really getting at: is there a 4-section tripod that can equal the sturdiness of a comparable 3-section one?

I realize the convenience of a 4-section model because they can be more compact when folded.

Sorry for getting too long winded here. I'm just looking for general comments on the two formats.

Bill

In a nut shell, you can't have it all!! With in one tripod.
My most used tripod is a four section with no center column ,
Gitzo :GT5561SGT It extends to a bit over 8ft @ 7.5#. Head: Wimberly 3.15# I use it with a D7100 and a Sigma 150-500 & 200mm macro, it get down on the ground. Not light but damned sturdy!!! The GT is no longer offered.
for short lens I use a Manfroto carbon fiber four section with an Induro ball head, I Very seldom use the lower sections or the center column, its light weight but not near as steady as the gitzo.
