Not too long ago, the Old Man of the Mountain in NH collapsed. Nothing is permanent.
When I hiked the High Lakes Trail at Mt. Rainier there was a lookout that looked down over Louise Lake. It had no security fencing anywhere near the edge. I got just so far and then I laid down on my belly with camera in hand crawled to the edge. I wasted no time, took my shot, and backed out.
