I switched to this approach about 10 years ago and don't expect to go back. Occasionally I need one of my old jpgs and am always frustrated with how little I can do to it in PP compared to the raw. If jpg works for you, then definitely don't change. It's a hobby, not a religion.

I shoot JPG. The camera gives me ~8 MB files per photo, more than enough detail for my purposes. The largest I print is 8X10 and I rarely do that. My images are for viewing on a computer monitor. I save the original in an "archive" folder and all PP is saved separately. Perhaps my editing skills are limited, but I have no idea what I can't accomplish PPing JPGs.

I process my jpgs. Why do you want to compare apples and oranges? Show me a RAW SOOC and I'll show you an unfinished image!

I chose the Canon 80D over the 7D MK II for the better low light (-3 EV) performance and lower price. It has the same sensor, and newer focusing mechanism.

A totally different suggestion. A bridge camera might suit your needs. I wouldn't suggest it if you intend to have large prints (greater than 8X10)made, but a super zoom might be the ticket if your budget isn't up to a DLSR. The Canon SX60HS is one such. It offers both viewfinder and screen for composing, and it has a hot shoe for when the built in flash is too small. It also has a 21-1365 mm equivalent lens. It is under $500 new, and should be available refurbished for less. A refurbished SX50HS is almost as good, and is priced less. It is, however, replaced by the SX60HS.

I hesitate to say I only shoot jpg. Apparently I am in the vast minority.

I do not sell photos, and rarely print. I post on social media and email. The only prints I've had made in the last decade are 8 X 10s in a photo album of singers that I subsequently have autographed when I see them again. I shoot many other subjects, but that is all I have printed.

I upgraded from a T2i to the 80D for several reasons.

1st) Focusing in low light. Having had issues with the T2i in that regard, and "Live View" being TOTALLY useless in low light (the focusing sensor being contrast), the improved focusing sensitivity (to EV -3 at f8 in the 80D) and dramatically improved in Live View (Dual Pixel CMOS AF) was significant.

2nd) The articulated viewing screen is a great help when taking shots holding the camera over my head - Yes, this has come up on occasion

3rd) While not important in the decision before I had the camera, I find the touch screen to be a wonderful feature.

4th) It might come in handy some day, remote control via Wi-Fi. Not high on my list, but a feature. I don't use it to upload to my computer, the USB connection is much faster.

Yes, Auto to start, then P, then Tv or Av. Study the "holy 3" controls, ISO, Aperture, Shutter Speed. and learn how each affects the photo. Each can help or hurt a photo.

I recently upgraded from a Canon T2i to the 80D. I'm very happy with it. My "walking around" lens is an old Sigma 18-250. It covers all but the most extreme. Keep in mind that an APS-C camera makes the field of view of a lens equal to 1.6 times narrower than on a full frame camera. This makes it look like a 1.6 times longer lens. Great for shots of birds, not so great for landscapes.

Searched but didn't find. When I click on download, I get a new tab with the image. What I want is to download the image file so I can see the EXIF data in one of my "apps".

I have dealt with 42nd St Photo and cannot recommend them. The 80D they advertise is grey market - NO USA WARRANTY! It is a bait and switch game. Adding warranty will bring the price up to the competition, probably with less extras.

I own a Canon SX50 HS and love it. The current model is the SX60 HS which seems competitive with the Sony but for much less. Can anyone tell me the advantage of the Sony over the Canon? The Canon SX50 HS has a lens that goes out to 1200 equivalent.

wsa111 - It is obvious from the responses that most prefer saving RAW. I don't. It all boils down to need. I almost never print, and when I do, never more than 8 X 10 so the IQ advantage of RAW is not of concern to me. With today's cameras, even "high" .jpg files are huge and contain enough data for MY purposes.

It boils down to need. You haven't indicated what you do with your photos, so not knowing your needs, it is impossible to advise. Suffice it to say, ANY file compression is considered "lossy". If such loss is tolerable, than compress. Compress to the largest size you may need in the future. Only edit copies of what is saved, as each save of a compressed file losses again.

Debbie, I have read both your threads now, and it seems to me that you are still in the haystack looking for that needle. I will not recommend a camera for you because your needs and desires are different from mine. I will suggest that you go to B&H Photo in NYC. They have an amazing number of cameras in stock. Explain your concerns, and they will let you hold and shoot almost anything they have. Only by doing so (at least once, maybe twice) will you find a camera with which YOU are comfortable. Open your mind to the options available, including rangefinder and/or mirrirless. B&H will take the time to explain each to you. Stay from stores like 47th Street Photo. There are other reputable stores if you wish to visit another; use the search feature on this site to check on a stores reputation.

Others on this site will recommend their personal favorites. They do so with the best of intentions, but only you can know when you feel that perfect fit. Also, do not disregard cameras that have been refurbished (but only by their manufacturers); you can often get a fairly new camera at a great price. Good luck, and please keep us posted as to your progress. Bill

I have read repeatedly about 42nd St Photo being bad, but not 47th St Photo. Anyone else hear about 47th?
