It's not really the lens that supports it but if the version of auto distortion control that's loaded in the camera supports that lens. The latest version is v1.009. You can see which version is loaded in the same menu where you check the firmware version. The number listed at the top is the firmware version. The number below that is the auto distortion control data version. That can be downloaded from Nikon's website at: http://nikonimglib.com/dcdata/#anc001. There's a list there that shows all of the lenses that are supported.

My camera came with v1.009 installed. The 18-140mm lens must be a newer lens that isn't in the code yet.

Hi
I am new here and I am seeking advice/knowledge/opinions on camera selection. I solo backpack in remote wilderness and I am looking for a new camera to photograph scenery and wildlife. An SLR(with lenses) is just too heavy to carry. I have been reading many reviews on the Canon sx50...the Lumix fz270...and the new Nikon CP600. I really like the 20mm lens of the Lumix but the reviews are mixed on photo quality...mostly as you zoom. I also need the HD video feature. I would appreciate any insight into these cameras.

thank you

I'm not knowledgable with those cameras, but I have looked at the Nikon 1 AW1 which Nikon claims to be waterproof and shockproof. It has interchangeable lens with 15 FPS shooting rate. Depending on what you will be doing outside, this might be worth investigating.

On the D7100, I found that when auto distortion control is off, image quality set to basic, image size set to s, and 1.3 crop factor that I can get 97 images in the buffer. When auto distortion control turned back on, the buffer drops to 5. That's a huge penalty. Further, if I have a 18-140mm lens mounted which doesn't support distortion control, the setting for auto distortion control cannot be changed without switching to a lens that supports it. This is odd. The 18-140mm lens will honor which ever setting that the distortion control was last set. So, if I want to effect the buffer size, I must swap lenses to make the desired change.

Has any of you D7100 owners notice this?

Shoot raw files

Work around a baby’s routine

Use fast lenses

Modeling lights get hot, so be cautious around them

Take spare cameras and lenses to weddings

Find wedding shoot locations in advance

Buy a good tripod

Master the use of the flash

Check all images at 100%

Good tips. I have read that formatting the memory card is less wear and tear on the longevity of the memory capabilities than deleting individual images.

So I am getting ready to purchase a new DSLR and am faced with several choices. I have been considering a Canon 70D, a Nikon D7100 and now, thanks to a visit to my local camera shop I have added a Full Size Sensor in the Nikon D610. I am leaning toward the D610 but am looking for similar experiences in the Photographic world

Those are all good choices. I was ready to purchase the Canon 60D a few years ago, but kept searching. I had an old Minolta 7000 Maxxum film camera and wasn't sure what to get. I went through a couple of Point and Shoot camera's which seemed to satisfy me at the time.

Then grand babies were on their way so I convinced myself that I needed a good DSLR. I still didn't know what to get so I went to the local camera store and looked at Canon 60D, Nikon D3000, Nikon D3100, Nikon D5100, Nikon D7100, Sony A77, Sony A99, and the Nikon D610. I also looked at the Nikon 1 and some of the mirrorless camera's.

I was leaning towards the Sony since they bought out the Minolta camera business and my old lenses from the 35mm will fit the camera body.

Still not knowing what to do, I bought a Nikon D3000 refurbished. Great price. Got my mojo back on and fell in love with photography all over again.

That lasted about 6 months. Then I upgraded to a D7100.

The best thing for you to do is to get one in your hands to see how it feels. The D7100 and D610 look identical aside from the badging on the outside and the DX vs FullFrame. At my experience level, the D7100 made more sense. I'm very happy with it. Whatever you do, don't skimp on lenses. Match the quality of the lens to the quality of the camera.

I currently use the Nikon D5100 (2 years) and plan on purchasing the D7100. Any users on here have any feedback on the camera? The reviews I've read so far are very impressive.

Rumor has it that Nikon is going to release a newer model in this line, anybody heard anything on this?

One more question on the D7100. Does it have a DOF preview. The D5100 does not and I think this would be another useful feature if it does.

The D7100 is a very nice camera. I upgraded from a D3000 which gave me some good low light options. Not sure going from a D5100 is a big enough jump based on the extra cost compared to what you have. That would be a tough sell for me. On the other hand, if budget isn't a concern, by all means, upgrade.

I feel fortunate to have Robert's Camera close by in a northern suburb of Indianapolis. I recently jumped back into photography as a hobby and can't imagine not having access to cameras to hold and feel before purchasing.

My goal when I started out in July was to be able to shoot in Manual Mode in order to have complete control over my D7100. Now that I understand, somewhat, I am finding myself switching to Aperture very often and even Shutter Speed once in a while but, never in Auto. There are many great photographers within UHH and I find myself wondering how each of you shoot or your mindset regarding Modes. I do use AFC mostly and back button focusing. It bothers me that, while I understand the triangle, I cannot seem to master only shooting in Manual. Please share your thoughts.

I find myself using Aperture mode most of the time. I switch to shutter priority when I shoot fountains or streams.

Good Morning, one of you asked for a couple of wildlife shots, so I have posted a couple. Not sure how these will compare to the portrait as they are not captured with controlled lighting. Annie's comments did certainly take the wind out of my sails, but I asked for it. I was a bit surprised as the equipment I used on the two portraits was
Nikon d-700 full frame, prime 85mm Nikon lens, sekonic L-358, 5' octobox, and reflector. Was shot on tripod, however, I think I failed to shut off the vibration reduction tab which I know you are suppose to. Annie was right in the skin tone of the 17 yr. old. These shots were in Jan. and Savannah was more white from the long winter and wanted me to warm her up in Picasa to look more tan for her friends...(I don't do photo shop) Her mom & dad were more natural. The person making comment on back-drop not being ironed.....good point! I have 5 on a hanging slide rack. I will get that done. Lastly, the girl was shot at F-13, 125, iso 200....the couple @ F-10, 125, iso 200. The octobox was set about 3 to 4 feet 45 degrees to left and reflector in front to the right as I remember. I want to get it right........what am I doing wrong annie? My skins is old and tough.....Oh, the light is a interfit s250 and, as I remember was set at about 1/4 to 1/2 power.

I'm no expert to comment on the portraits as I am also in a steep learning mode right now. But, I must say, the wildlife shots are pretty amazing. That is my life's pursuit right now. Thanks for the inspiration.

D3200. Thinking of getting my daughter this camera. I'm Nikon dumb, so anyone that has one or knows about it...I welcome your thoughts on a 'starter' camera. She takes great photos with her iPhone, but she needs a DSLR to enter the real photography world. Many thanks. BTW..it refurbished (which doesn't bother me) and is selling for $369 with an 18-55mm VR lens and Lightroom 5.

A very good camera. If she is new to photography, then she'll get some years of usage out of this model. Good luck.

hmmm.... I spent my time and found the camera I like and matched the lens that will allow the camera to produce the best results. Never really cared if it is called a cropped sensor or DX format. I'll go with DX format since that is what the manufacturer put on the camera. It's all terminology. In the end, at least we can communicate to each other and understand the reference.
