Thanks for all the great replies and advice.
I mainly hand-hold my camera, especially when doing portraits, and that may be where the problem is.
I guess the main problem I have is focusing. I normally use auto-focus because I don't trust my eyes to focus manually, but many times I find, after downloading, that the focus was not on the subject, even though it looked as if it was when I was taking the photo. And I use a high enough shutter speed that that shouldn't be a factor.
I guess I just need to continue using the t3i while paying even more attention to focus. I don't wear prescription glasses, but I DO have to use them to read or use my cell phone. I surely hope it's not a matter of aging that is causing my problems :( -- I'm 50, and not ready to give up taking pictures.

I have a T2i (couldn't really see any difference in the T3i and T2i so I just stayed with the T2i for $$$ reasons. I get great shots using a 35 or 50 F1.8 and portraits with with the 50 or an 85 F1.8. Often, it is a matter of learning the camera well....work it out and see.

I've done this several times. The key is to have someone who knows the wedding party, family & friends well enough to take charge with the setup of images & expedite the process. Free weddings are generally not as well planned and it is more difficult to get the bride & groom seriously involved. It's frustrating to say the least. Here is a list I provide and have the bride & groom highlight in yellow what images they must have. I give the option of them providing a couple of 32gb class 10 cards that I give them afterwards or give them a CD from my cards. I may or may not edit. Here is the list: WEDDING IMAGES

I just zoomed in to 400% and see it is in Calgary. Too bad. I was up in Toronto and Ottawa last year for a few weeks working. Could have swung over. My client would have pay'd the in/out as it would have been cheaper than flying down south here back and forth every week for a month.

I had a fight, oops argument, here on this forum once about me being Catholic/Christian. My views are more agnostic now and I was kicked to the ground about me not being a proper Catholic/Christian with going to church on Sunday and hating everyone Monday through Saturday. Well maybe that is so, but the 22 years of that upbringing and being an alter boy taught me that you help others. I am not overly surprised at some of the comments here. Humanity really sucks. In April of 2000, I flat lined in the ER because of loss of blood, No kidding, I went into the light. So I guess how I am running my life has an expected out come. For the few of you, I will look down on you when my day comes and ask if you want any pictures taken for free, cause I will be happy and have all the time in the world. Shit, listen to me, I could be a preacher...........NAH. Take care.

Believe it or not, I know a group of photographers who do just that. They will take wedding photos, birthday photos, etc for anyone who cannot afford to pay for a professional. They do no pp. They simply put all the photos on a disc and give them to the individual. I was at one wedding reception where they had two photographers taking pictures. When they were through, they downloaded all shots to a cd and handed it to the bride. I spoke to one of them and he said they enjoyed "giving something back".

My daughter has done this a few times (she is a regular, every day, DSLR user with a T2i and a few lenses and composes some great photos. After a couple of these a family hired her for $500...not bad for a college kid....and she has amassed a few more since.

Some folks (parents!) simply can't shell out a coul0e of grand...maybe if you have a day off, "paying it forward" isn't a bad move.

I guess what I try to get across is that for the low cost, the D90 offers almost identical specs and performance of a D7000/7100,,,it is just a great all around camera and can be found on E-bay and elsewhere with less than 12K clicks and dirt cheap!

I use the D90 a bunch! Has drive motor so you can uise older lenses, is nearly identical to the 7000/7100 and is tough! You cannot go wrong with a D90...still one of Nikon's winners!

Motorcycles are even worse! I have seen guys take a photo, place the camera atop a saddlebag or fender, apply sunscreen, get a drink, and put gloves back on, jacket on and....well, you know the rest!

Never had issues with "grey/gray market...most lenses are out of warranty before the average user reaches 5,000 clicks anyway so consider a $300 lens disposable....repairs run that much and chances are you'll never need them!

Having a "genuine" Nikon or Canon lens is little more than barroom bragging rights!

Tamron 18 - 270.....can be a little stiff between 135 - 200 but an all around fine lens that takes in all the ranges at a reasonable price (not sure the Di is necessary and the earlier versions are less expensive.)

The reason I got my D80 new when I did 6 years ago was because I saw no need for video. It handled and shot just like the N70 I was using at the time but had many more functions that took me a couple of years to learn. The D90 is still a great camera, and if my D80 ever quits, I may buy a D90 as a backup for my D610.

Have to agree on that! NO DSLR is a substitute for a good video camera if video is the primary function.

I have two D90s (essentially a D7000 in a plastic versus metal body) and acquired a bunch of older lenses on E-bay...all auto focus on the D90. If you have older Nikon lenses and want auto focus and the essentials and more, for the money, a D90 makes a killer walk about camera and lens system. I am not a pro, so for the money...well, you know!

The Sigma 10 - 20 is an excellent lens for your purposes and can be found on E-Bay for around $200 - 300.....money well spent. Just remember that ultra-wide means close up work!

First off, 3 month builder warranty at that price is no bargain. Also the hard drive is small (you really want a 1 tb hard drive). If it is not W7 Professional, then you are not get the full power of the OS. And finally, Office 2003 is ancient and has been replaced by Office 2007, Office 2010, and Office 365.
Then you have to add on a monitor, keyboard and mouse for at least $175more (that's only for wired, not wireless).
You can better with a name brand machine.

Though Office 2003 may seem "antiquated", I still use Office 2000 (though I have 2007 and 2013) because it works under Win 7 and is essentially the same...no issues and much more user friendly (IMHO)

I agree on the brand name machine (Dell, HP, etc.) but...custom builds are sometimes more beneficial (multiple hard drives and optical drives....mine has three 2 TB HDDs and two CD/DVD drives) and it isn't all tat difficult to consult places like New Egg and Tiger Direct for advice....building a machine yourself can be gratifying and isn't that hard to assemble!
