Thanks for the wise counsel. The nine iron stays in the bag. The wedges come out and get cleaned and then back in the bag. The T2i goes to the golf course!

Dear Hogs: Here is the last episode of the ugly Manual Settings saga. After following all advice offered, I started going through all of the possible reasons that the T2i was not performing as it should. Batteries in, batteries out. Camera on, camera off. Settings out. Time out for a diet soda. Then the light bulb went off. In my zeal to save a few pennies some tome ago, I purchased a third-party battery grip. It performed well and I was happy. Using the scientific method, I removed the third-party battery grip, inserted battery into camera and fired it up. WHAM, BAM!!!! TURNED MODE DIAL TO MANUAL, HIT THE MAIN DIAL AND THE SHUTTER SPEED CHANGED. HELD DOWN THE AV BUTTON AND THE APERTURE CHANGED. Lesson learned..............sometimes it costs too much to save a little on equipment. Thanks to all of the Hogs that were kind enough to offer some help. I'm going out to shoot some prize winning images. Thanks again.

I thought that contacting Canon might solve the problem, so......I did. Here is their reply.

"Dear Mr. Flax:

Thank you for contacting Canon product support. I appreciate the opportunity to assist you with the Manual shooting mode on your EOS Rebel T2i. I am sorry for the difficulty adjusting the shutter speed and aperture values.

Please note, in order to change the shutter speed and/or aperture value, first press the shutter button halfway to activate the cameras focusing system. Next, turn the main dial until the desired settings are selected.

If the main dial is unresponsive, this would represent a hardware issue that we are unable to provide steps to fix through e-mail. We regret this inconvenience.

Since the camera is more than one year old, it is out of warranty. We have two service options available: you may participate in the Canon Loyalty Program, or send the camera in for repair.

The Canon Loyalty Program option allows you to replace your current camera with a refurbished Canon Camera for a discounted fee, and have it shipped via Ground delivery. The refurbished unit offered through this program carries a one year warranty. The original non-functioning camera would then be returned to Canon USA for recycling using a prepaid shipping label that would be provided. If you would like to take part in this option, please call our Sales Department at (866) 443-8002 seven days a week, 8am to Midnight. Let them know you have been working with email technical support and the Canon Loyalty Program was offered. Be sure to have your serial number for your camera at the time of your call.

You can also send your camera in for service. If you prefer this option, please forward your digital camera to the Factory Service Center shown below. When shipping your camera, please be sure to remove the memory card and battery. You are not required to send any accessories or manuals when shipping the camera. Be sure to include your name, street address (no P.O. boxes, please), telephone number, and a letter describing the issue with the product.

The standard cost for repair is $190. Cameras damaged by liquid, sand, applied pressure or force may have a higher repair cost, depending on the results of the Factory Service Center's evaluation.

As we do not provide RMA numbers for service, we suggest using a trackable and insurable service (i.e. UPS, Federal Express, Priority Mail) to ship your camera. Please package the camera very securely to prevent damage during shipment.

Please send your camera to the following address:

Canon Factory Service Center
12022 Canon Boulevard
Newport News, VA 23606

Upon arrival at the Factory Service Center, your camera will be logged in to our repair database and assigned a repair number. Next, the camera will be visually inspected and you will be advised of the findings.

A written estimate will be sent to you at the address that you have provided. The repairs to your camera will not begin until you approve this estimate and make payment arrangements. If, after receiving the estimate, you do not wish to have the camera repaired, please inform the Factory Service Center of your decision as soon as possible. If you decline the estimate, the camera will be shipped back to you unrepaired.

When the repairs are complete, the camera will be shipped back to you via Federal Express or UPS. The length of time for the repair will be dependent upon the nature of the repair and availability of parts, if needed. Usually, repairs are completed within approximately seven to ten business days of payment.

Once you have confirmed with your shipper that the camera has been delivered, you are more than welcome to contact us for repair updates. Please include your name, address, and telephone number, as well as the serial number of the camera, in all repair status inquiries.

Please let us know if we can be of any further assistance with your EOS Rebel T2i. Thank you for choosing Canon.

Sincerely,

Chris
Technical Support Representative

Now I have to put on my thinking cap! Maybe I will just use the camera for non-creative photography. Grrr. I just hate it when mechanical things break down.

The story is: I want to shoot in Manual. I turn the Mode Dial to Manual. I turn the Main Dial to change the shutter speed......nothing....nada....no movement....no change. I press and hold the AV button while I rotate the Main Dial....nothing.....nada.....zip....no movement. I say to myself, Self, this thing is really just a computer, so I reboot. Nothing, nada, zip! What should I do? Wife will wake up if I throw it against the wall. Do I take a 9 iron and pitch it into the living room? Dust off my AE-1? I don't have any Photo Blue Cross. This will have to come out of my jeans. What to do? What to Do?

This file was passed on to me by my sister (Nikon D3100). She did not take them but wishes that she had. I did not take them and wish that I could. I think that they are worth the view.

After you get everyone in position, ask everyone to close their eyes and open them on the count of three. Focus and count. Shoot on three. And four, five and six.
