Wow... After your response to me about being a light hunny I went to have a look at some of your other posts. This is the first one I saw.

Good bless you. I look forward to reading more from you.

my older nikon lens does not autofocus nor meter. Yes I can snap a photo, but only in manual mode, and without the meter information, it is guess work at best. So in practicality I am unable to use it at this time.

When you say you need the DOF, you are referring to "anti bokeh" correct? A background that is in focus? Do I understand this correctly, the higher the f stop, then the higher ISO, and then the faster the shutter speed and the more in focus the background? I am trying to get my arms around all of this...

When I shoot still life, I think I want a good bokeh, but sports/action I want a solid background???? Generally speaking of course

I believe the photo world is divided (and not evenly) between quick convenience shots that are meant for social media and quick memories vs. those people who understand and believe in the craft of photography. Unfortunately like many "skills", auto functions and technology are replacing the craft. Those of us who geek out on ISO and white balance etc. are in a distinct minority of those who capture images.

I too am new here. I came from a film background also, but had limited experience years ago with a D50. I liked the camera and bought some nice glass for it. Unfortunately that glass is not completely compatible with my new d3400. All that aside, I am LOVING using the manual programs on my new rig and relearning all the stuff that I thought was so cumbersome in the "film days". I hope you get as much enjoyment out of your learning curve as I am getting out of mine.

So I am recently reintroduced to this world, and as I go back to my technologically ancient lenses (nikon 80-200 f2.8) that do not work on my new d3400 I find myself, for no reason other than I am pulled toward a fixed high f-stop, craving new glass based on that factor alone. Could I just be a light junkie? I really like the shots I take with lower ISO (I don't like to go over 800) but is this a hold over from my film days and does it still apply in the digital age? Less than 1000 pictures on my new camera and I feel like I am just a recovering glass junkie.... any thoughts that might help?

I was stunned when my wife gave me a d3400 kit for Christmas. I had not used my old d50 for over 6 years since the kids left, and was not even sure where it was. I did a bit of research and was determined to get back the knowledge of photography I had learned on film. I was NOT going to be a "green dot auto shoot guy"!! I have been having a ball. Today I found UHH and I feel like another world has opened for me (a bit dramatic I know....). So I wanted to thank you all in advance for your patience and helpfulness as I explore this all over again.

I have added a couple of my first efforts. The first is PP, all I really did was remove some partial leaves that were a distraction and then cropped. The second was first day out of the box in Deerfield Beach, FL, and the last one, while not an interesting subject, was me playing with the depth of field and bokeh with the aperture setting. NONE of these pics were taken on auto.... Be kind, I'm a bit envious and intimidated by the d850 and FF cannon people.
