I guess if you don't include the millions of additional wartime casualties it would have cost for the US to try to invade and occupy the Soviet Union, and that's assuming that the Congress and American people would have agreed to it, which is utter fantasy on your part. The people were more than done with war after WWII and in no apatite to start another war with world's 2nd strongest power who had just got done almost single-handedly defeating N**i Germany.

Since China is the largest country in the world as far as population goes, and is our main competitor in power in the world, it seems elegant to get along with her in order to address inevitable problems that arise--and they do arise.

That's called being an adult and trying to work constructively.

Diplomacy exists in order for nations of the world to address their own meaningful issues and resolve tensions as much as possible by mature discussion, cooperation, and adult-like insight.

The only other possibility is going to war regularly, which is sometimes inconvenient.

In China's eyes, Taiwan is a bunch of rebels, and a good ole Republican decided we need to be able to talk to China without going to war every six months or year; that good ole' boy was Richard Nixon.

The issue is so delicate that the US Government doesn't say "the government of Taiwan," but says "the government on Taiwan" in consideration that this is easier than warfare.

It doesn't have the simplicity of a Donald Trump, but it does reduce casualities and occasionally solves an issue between us.

I know you must prefer sending our children to war annually, which is why You aren't President, but normal people, thinking people, think this is preferable to the other option.
