Everyone has offered great suggestions. One not mentioned is the great opportunities before dawn and after sunset blue hour and during the night. If conditions are good amazing star photos over the canyon are possible. I took this photo in January at the Desert View Watchtower near the east entrance to the park. Just experiment and have fun!

Since nobody here, at least so far, has been able to give you a definitive answer, maybe you should consider asking Nikon.

Yes, I did that but have not heard back yet.

From the manual.

d7: File Number Sequence
When a picture is taken, the camera names the file by adding one to the last file number used. This option controls whether file numbering continues from the last number used when a new folder is created, the memory card is formatted, or a new memory card is inserted in the camera.

On
When a new folder is created, the memory card formatted, or a new memory card inserted in the camera, file numbering continues from the last number used or from the largest file number in the current folder, whichever is higher. If a photograph is taken when the current folder contains a photograph numbered 9999, a new folder will be created automatically and file numbering will begin again from 0001.
Off
File numbering is reset to 0001 when a new folder is created, the memory card is formatted, or a new memory card is inserted in the camera. Note that a new folder is created automatically if a picture is taken when the current folder contains 5000 pictures.
Reset
As for On, except that the next picture taken is assigned a file number by adding one to the largest file number in the current folder. If the folder is empty, file numbering is reset to 0001.

File Number Sequence

If the current folder is numbered 999 and contains either 5000 pictures or a photograph numbered 9999, the shutter-release button will be disabled and no further pictures can be taken (in addition, movie recording may be disabled if the camera calculates that the number of files needed to record a movie of the maximum length would result in the folder containing over 5000 files or a file with a number over 9999). Choose Reset for Custom Setting d7 (File number sequence) and then either format the current memory card or insert a new memory card.

Thanks Bob, I read those settings and I think the answer to my question is NO, I cannot simply restart the numbering sequence. I would not want it to reset every time there is a new folder or I reformat a card or insert a new card.

I appreciate all the suggestions but nobody has answered my question...is it possible to restart the numbering sequence on the camera?

Thanks

Have you looked in your manual under File Naming?
On my Df and my D7200 in the Shooting Menu under File Naming you can change the first three characters (usually DSC) to any 3 character alpha-numeric you choose.

Yes I am aware of that but if I change the first three characters does that start the numbering over? My issue is that I don't want the numbering to hit the 9999 during a trip and start the numbering at 0001.

Hello, I have the Nikon D850 and would like to know how to reset the file naming to start at 0001 again instead of letting it go to 9999 and then it starts over. I would like to start it at the beginning of a big trip so it does not role over during the trip. It might be an easy answer but I can't see it, any help is appreciated! Thank you...

No it only takes the images at the varying focus distances throughout the scene. You then do the stacking in PS or other available programs. Once the stacking is done you can edit the final image in either LR, PS or what ever program you use.

I usually set the focus stacking to 25 photos and never get that many. The stacking in the camera stops taking photos when it reached infinity focus. With you using the wide angle lens even fewer photos will be needed to reach infinity.

I am guessing you have not used this feature of the D850 yet? Go outside and give it a try.

I don't know if you are close to Colorado or are flexible but as the aspens start to change there are web sites that tell you the progression of the color changes at spots around the state. You can search the web for those. Some of the local Denver TV stations have info on their web sites also.

Great choice for fall colors. Timing depends on the moisture and temperatures but the 3rd week could be a little early. One of the most photographed places in the country is from Maroon Lake with the two peaks of Maroon Bells in the background. This is just outside of Aspen. The sunrise is especially wonderful but you need to get there an hour or more before so you can get a spot along the shoreline. It is a beautiful hike from Maroon Lake up to Buckskin Pass as you are surrounded by peaks over 14,000 feet and the scenery is stunning. This photo was from a few years ago about October 1st...

I think you have received a lot of good advice but I just wanted to agree, if you are taking a "trip of a lifetime", do not go without a backup camera even if it never leaves your suitcase. At the very least it gives you peace of mind...

I was there in January and did not use a polarizing filter or ND filters. I am not saying they might not come in handy in certain situations. Definitely a tripod, wide angle lens, and up to a 200 or 300mm lens. It can be very cold on the rim before sunrise especially if you are getting out early for star photos. They are a few shots I got...

Hello, I was directed to your group as a possible help to me. I posted the following questions in the general forum...

Hello, I have the Nikon D850 so I wanted to upgrade my monitor to take advantage of the image quality from this camera. I bought a monitor with the following specs:

27" In-Plane Switching (IPS) Panel
DVI-DL / HDMI 1.4 / DP 1.2 Inputs
2560 x 1440 Resolution
1000:1 Contrast Ratio
350 cd/m² Brightness
178°/178° Viewing Angles
5 ms (GtG) Response Time
1.07 Billion Color Support
OSD Controller to Switch Color Modes
99% AdobeRGB Color Gamut

I thought that one with the 99% Adobe RGB or greater was best since I use this in LR and PS. My question is this - the monitor has amazing colors, sharpness, etc. but it seems that images I create with this look flat on other computers, TV, etc. Is this because they may be in SRGB color so they look under saturated? I don't really understand how this works but perhaps some of you can help explain it to me. I don't know if there are different settings I should use or if this is just the way it is. I can still return this monitor if there is a better option for me.

Thanks much!
