Thank you, I was able to capture him and the neighbor across the street had a cage. We are in the process of putting signs up around the neighborhood. Don't know how far he could have flown, we are assuming local for now.

He ?? landed on the golf course behind my house, immediately drawing the attention of a cat and a coopers hawk. Interceed or let life play out, grab the tripod or shoot hand held. Call me an old soft fool, but I yelled and shot as racing to intercede. This is the photo I am posting around town to try and find his owner.

My name is Randy and I am a Hummer aditic. I was setting up multiple cameras on tripods for yet an other attempt to capture a female black widow (mirror below, multiple cameras above) when he landed on the feeder and started flashing me. Yes the 7d with the 400/f 5.6 was mounted on a tripod, but the tripod was not touching the ground. this technique, the famous "grab and snap" usually results in my better shots. The camera was in aperture priority ISO 400, and I was in a hurry.

Just watching I would swear the finches fly from the fence to the feeder, but the lens does not lie

Just a little flair before landing

you have such a chance, click away. Just across the Golden Gate is the Battery, start clicking there and reload for Muir Woods. Day one and more than a 1,000 clicks. When you reach Crescent City (a million clicks later) do not miss the chance to click yourself into oblivion with the trifecta of Seascape and light house, Monster Elk in full display, and the greatest display of giant Redwood trees on the face of the earth. Later on in the Gold Country you can visit and click away at Murphy's big trees a whole different type of giant Redwood tree. If time allows take a day trip from Petaluma to the Napa Sonoma wine country, and click away. Later on in your trip you will be in the middle of the Amador wine country, snap, click and taste your way across California. Mt. Shasta the home of the first Americans story of creation, Mt. Lassen and an unbelievable hike to the lip of an active Volcano. Between the two are fields of Obsidian and Rhyolite the back bone of trade before the white man and his fur driven obsession.

Wow so much to learn, Sony A7RII 42mp mirrorless, no shutter click. Got to find a test drive. Mirrorless ??? silent shooting could be a real boost at times.
Nikon and Cannon both have more models than I can see the need for, which one offers the tools I need/want. Over 6k for 20mp is not a compelling enough reason to consider the 1D. I was leaning toward the 5D SR, but now..... What is mirrorless all about?? light weight and silent with the functionality of DSLR

I think FF would have helped here

steveg48 You are the first to speak to my understanding, or lack of, of sensors. Comparing FF sensors, a 50 mp sensor has a greater pixel density than does a 36 mp sensor. (yes or no??) I originally chose a cropped sensor because it had the greatest pixel density, thus potentially the highest resolution. I am looking at other than Cannon and weight is a concern. Presently I use my mountain bike as a wheelbarrow to transport my equipment to remote locations. (this works well, but a flat tire can ruin a good day) What makes one sensor better than an other? color reproduction, sharpness, speed ??? What do I look for??

PS well past 65 much closer to 70

to me it is not a question of what my 7D isn't doing, but more of a question of what more can I do in full frame.

Thank you for the reply's. In a nutshell the advice is to wait and see what the 5D Mark 4 brings to the table, I can do that. It would seem foolish not to, but I find the lure of resolution (50 mp) quite compelling and here is where my confusion comes in. The 50 mp is the pixel density for the sensor (the full frame), if I crop the picture before printing the pixel density could be the same as I have now ???(that really is a question, I think I understand but I could be wrong) When averaging up (think poster print) the image pixelates out. When I get a picture I love and want to print it large there is no substitute for resolution, or am I wrong??

Just found this place and I am looking for advice on choosing a FF body. Pretend price is not a problem and help me with ease of use, lens availability, sensor quality, build quality and anything you think I might be overlooking. Planning this purchase for my September birthday, SO:

By way of introduction I ask a simple question, “ what is the best FF body” and to overly complicate the answer I submit my background synopsis. I am an amateur, amateur, a hobbyist. I am much more a “reactionary” photographer than a composing artist. That is to say I am usually so busy trying to capture the moment that composition becomes lost in confusion. In the calm moments of life I play in the image triangle of SS, aperture and ISO. When opportunity comes a calling I often struggle with which knob or wheel does what. I usually set my 7D up in aperture priority, burst mode, 2 stops either side and leave my Ti in full automatic. I have a flicker page, but I think it is against the rules to post a link to it. With 65 a distant memory, I know this will be the last body I will likely buy.
I am not very good at “PP” , probably because I have not spent the time required learning how. I struggle with DOF in my macro’s, and play with it in both landscape and wildlife (I am not a portrait type of guy) . My knowledge of “FF” body is very limited, given that; go for the 5Dsr (max mp) or 5D mark IV (pull quality stills from the hd stream) ???
