Taken Thursday 7/4 with Nikon D7500, 16-80 f2.8-4 lens at about 50mm. ISO 100, 1/80 f5.6. Shot in camera RAW and post processed in Lightroom. First of my D7500 photos I really thought were good enough for the UHH crowd.

This is a poor quality shot but I was in a vehicle when we encountered a flock of wild turkeys half a block from our house. Along with the turkeys there were two or three of the birds shown below. They were about the size of a large chicken and the body shape reminded me of grouse or quail. I have never seen anything like them as far as I can recall. They were very shy and I couldn't get out of the vehicle without spooking them. The whole flock had gone over this gate and then proceeded to come back onto the road and move on.

Very definitely a guinea hen. My neighbor has them with his turkeys. These have been used in the past as "guard" birds, as they get excited and noisy if danger comes around.

I use pictures that are quite valuable to inmates for their family and girlfriends to get them to come to the chapel services. Hopefully they get more than a picture from their visit. As suggested, I have the background. I make them stand a few feet in front of the background. I use a Gary Fong diffuser for shadows. I use a lens at about 85mm. I use the bracket for red eye. What I can't seem to get are pictures that show some color (one of my backdrops has the American Flag) on the beautiful blue prison uniforms without getting some redness in the faces of the white inmates. Am looking for suggestions to in camera settings that might work. Right now I am in Program Auto mode, in Standard Picture Control with +1 in saturation and +5 in Sharpness. Background is blurred. Thanks to all who have already responded. Bob

I have a D7500-purchased recently, but shoot RAW and post process. For what you want I'd suggest going to picture control and selecting Neutral as opposed to Standard. Within Neutral I'd go lower with sharpness, and also start out at 0 for saturation, and see how that looks. You may also try doing -0.3 or -0.7 stops of flash compensation. Using the flash, even with the diffuser, is likely giving you pretty good contrast without adding any in picture settings. This camera has so many possible settings to try for .jpeg that it may take you a while to be satisfied, but I believe you can do it!

I was thinking of getting a smaller range zoom lens for a walk around lens. My Nikon D 7100 usually has a Tamron 16-300 mm on it. I love this lens.
Ebay has a Nikon 24-85 G lens around the $200.00 range.
What do you guys think of the lens? The 24-85 is the range I like.

I have the old non-VR 24-85G lens which I originally bought for my N80 film camera. Takes great pictures, though kind of lacking at the wide end for DX. I think I'd try to find a deal on the more recent VR version, which is also reputed to be good quality if you're going to be shooting up at the 85mm end a lot.

We were there about a year ago, and actually didn't see too much wildlife. You're more likely photographing scenery-canyons, arches, rock formations, and possibly flowers after the winter rains. I used an 18-140 mm lens for almost all of my shooting. Great places-you'll love the trip!

I'm about to replace my stolen gear (just got my ins. settlement) and notice that nearly all Nikkor (FX) lenses are "AF-S." But, a couple (incl. the 70-300 F4-5.6 that I want) is "AF-P." Could someone explain the difference between S and P?

Many thanks.

AF-P is the newest type of focusing motor, and is not supported by many of the older camera bodies. I'd choose the body you want, and then check to see which lenses will work with it. Plenty of AF-S lenses around that will work with most of the available Nikon bodies. Newest bodies like D500, D7500 and D850 will work with AF-P.

I seem to have lost the eyecup on my Nikon D750, I just noticed it was gone. Don't know how, when, or where! After doing some research, it appears to be a design flaw with the D70. Just wondering if any other Hoggers have experienced this, and if so, did you come up with a viable solution, other than carrying some extras in your camera gear bag.

Had trouble with the original eyecup on my D7000, apparently from getting it in and out of my backpack. On close inspection one of the small plastic tabs meant to keep it on had broken off. I was able to order replacement eyecups from amazon.com for not too much money, and never had any issues with the replacement.

Not too far from Wintergreen on the BRP is the Raven's Roost overlook, with a good view. Closer up toward I-64 is the trail to Humpback Rocks, which is relatively strenuous, but great views of the Shenandoah Valley from the rocks. Great craft beer in the area-just down the mountain (east side) is Devil's Backbone Brewery and restaurant-great beers & food. Staunton, just west on I-64 (at I-81) is the American Museum of Frontier Culture, which is an interesting and well done place. Have a great time!

Yes, l’ll only be in Shenandoah Natl park. During the course of the week, l will certainly cover the length of the drive itself, but know enough to know to explore, and appreciate the park, l must get in the woods! When Carol was alive, that’s what we did. Not to say l won’t set up at the overlooks with that big lens, or a w.a. One and add weight to the memory cards! It will be an emotional trip, in so many ways.

Sorry for your loss. My wife and I have hiked many miles of the trails, and had our 2 boys with us often (they're now grown up). Hawksbill Mountain is the highest point in the park, and just south of Skyland. There are several trails that can get you to the top, with a good view of the Shenandoah Valley from there. Also highly recommend James Madison's Montpelier (someone else mentioned this)-it is right off US 15 south of Orange, VA, which is south of Culpepper.

About the bears, we got some close ups about 15 feet. We were inside the car with windows cracked enuf to allow pix. The bears seemed as curious about us as we were of them. No hostile moves, just curious looking into the car. We were in Cades Cove. Going south there is a gravel road out of the cove going west. This is where we saw the bears. Go farther south and as you start back north there is a jeep trail going to hwy 129. Both are one way out only being so narrow. Although a one way the road west can be traversed in the family sedan. This is where we saw the bears.

We live 30 minutes from the Swift Run Gap entrance to SNP, and have visited many times. The waterfall hikes are usually awesome. Skyland is right near the Whiteoak Canyon, and should not be missed. Another loop hike (you can get a small book about loop hikes at the gift shops) is the Rose River Falls/Dark Hollow Falls Hike, which will be south of Skyland, but just north of Big Meadows (which I think they did a controlled burn there recently). A loop in the southern portion of the park you might like to try is the Doyles River Falls/Jones Run Falls, which is near the Dundo group camp and south of the Loft Mtn. campground. Starting to green up here at lower elevations, so it should be pretty up high soon! Enjoy.

Hi! I bought this to replace the 18-105mm "kit" lens that came with my D7000. I find it sharper than my original lens, and is my every day go-to lens for most landscape and people photos. Probably a little "short" for wildlife. I'd get one again, but probably get a refurb instead of paying full price for new. Never had an issue with it.

Took this trip many years ago and really enjoyed it. Super scenic. There is a book, probably available at the gift shop in Durango, which details the route mile by mile. Well worth the cost!
