Like a lot of people, whenever I go on a photo trip where I am spending multiple days photographing, I like to take a lap top with me. Every night I will copy the images to my lap top to review the photos. I don’t spend much time tweaking them, but I review to see what they look like and if, maybe I need to reshoot at that location. I do most of the work on the images on my desktop when I get home. My lap top has failed and needs to be replaced. My family is suggesting that I buy an iPad instead of a lap top. I have found out that Lightroom will work on an iPad. Has anyone used an iPad in this way and/or what would be your recommendations concerning this issue?

I prefer to use my ipad pro compared to my laptop because of the excellent screen resolution.

I'm using an entry level camera, Sony a6000 with APS-C sensor.
A year ago I bought a Tamron 18-200mm lens for APSC cameras. I really liked the Zoom capability but I couldn't take a sharp picture to save my life, even when using a tripod. So, last week I bought a Sony Zeiss 24-70mm full frame lens. What a difference! I can't believe that pictures can be so sharp.
The below picture shows side by side comparison of the same spot, the Aperture, ISO and shutter speed are the same and the distance from the camera to the subject is almost identical.

I have many Nikkor lenses and four Tamrons for my Nikon APSC cameras. Have never seen any noticeable difference in image quality for any of them including my Tamron 18-200. My cameras and lenses are older but so am I. lol

Interesting question. My immediate thought is probably not. Photography is both time consuming and expensive. On top of that we are an eccentric group, like birders used to be when I was growing up. There will always be a few who will join us old folks lugging around cameras and huge bulky lenses. I think that as cell cameras improve and fewer people print photographs the need for large sensors will decrease. We even now mostly share images electronically. We DSLR shooters hold on the old concepts of photography and like the the film people do we will become a small specialty group.

We are older and we like older things, especially DSLRs.

Stepping away from comparing specs, is there a camera that you just like?

It could be ease of use, results, handling, fun to use or any of those and more. It may even be a camera that you return to even when, by some measures, it is obsolete.

My 2012 Pentax X-5 "Superzoom" 16 MP bridge camera is one. I was surprised they were still going for around $120 when most others from that time were $30.

Fast handling, easy control, but not much manual exposure options and a decent lens. It does have some visual highlight/shadow warnings that are handy in the less-than-perfect EVF. More than once I've returned to it, or rediscovered shots taken with it that I liked.

Thoughts?

My choices of all my cameras are my D90s. Love the ergonomics, uses all of my lenses an produces great images. $150 in excellent condition and low shutter count.

With rain yesterday and looking the same today I was in "Sarah's" room looking at and holding/cleaning some older lenses.
Perhaps it is being nostalgic but I found that the old non-AI Nikon lenses have a special feel that is hard to describe.
They are well crafted and a pleasure to hold an use. Yes, they have weight being all metal but focus so smoothly and make one want to go out and take photos.
Newer lenses, for me, just lack the magic, regardless of the brand and maker.
All, weather permitting, just go out and shoot today and be glad to be alive and try one of those old lenses.

I am also enjoying and accumulating older Nikkor lenses8 from the eighties and nineties and Nikon DSLRs from 15-20 years ago. Maybe not as old as yours. And I especially enjoy the magic of shooting with them instead of them just sitting on the shelf.

Exactly. That plus the focus on mirrorless sales now have people moving to that style, especially since Canon, Fiji, Nikon and Sony have great deals on mirrorless so people are jumping in.

My son in law still creates great images with his D3200. Nothing wrong at all with DSLR cameras and lenses.

So true. I have used my d3400 for seven years along with my other DSLRs. Great images, wonderful colors. Light and great for travel. Have shot fireworks and other low light situations with excellent results. With a good lens it is a nice tool.

I’m not sure why people do this. With my 5D I have two slots for memory cards. Every now and then I head over to B&H and buy two or more SD cards and CF cards. I prefer to have an extra set lying around. I am not fond of formatting and re-formatting cards.

I keep a large supply of 2,4 and 8gb cards on hand along with my normal 16 gb cards. Why? Because they are hard to find and many of my cameras are older and use the small cards. Since I shook JPEG these sizes are more than adequate.

Back in 1983 I came back from a three week horse camping trip with a three week growth. Decided, what the heck ,lets see where this goes. Haven't shaved since; just quick trim. Had a mustache a few years only before that. Beats shaving everyday.

I shaved my mustache the first year we were married. My wife had never seen me without one. Insisted that I grow it back. That was 45 years ago.

The only memory cards that have failed on me have been a couple of SanDisk MicroSDs. Still, I think I should play it safe and order replacements for my current SD cards. A couple of my cameras have two card slots, but if one of them fails, that leaves me with just one, and if that fails...

I have two SD cards from July 2022, but the others go back several years. Yes, they work, but how long will they continue working? I've heard too many stories about people taking hundreds of pictures and having them all disappear.

I use only SanDisk cards and always carry at least one extra card since none of my cameras have more than one slot. I purchase from EBay vendors located in The USA. Have had only one failure in 18 years.

Getting Old

Don't be worried about your smartphone or TV spying on you. Your vacuum cleaner has been collecting dirt on you for years.

If you can't think of a word, say, "I forgot the English word for it." That way people will think you're bilingual instead of an idiot.

I'm at a place in my life where errands are starting to count as going out.

I'm getting tired of being part of a major historical event.

I don't always go the extra mile, but when I do it's because I missed my exit.

Ate salad for dinner. Mostly croutons and tomatoes. Really just one big round crouton covered with tomato sauce, and cheese. FINE, it was a pizza.... OK, I ate a pizza! Are you happy now?

I just did a week's worth of cardio after walking into a spider web.

Kids today don't know how easy they have it. When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag carpet to change the TV channel.

I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or smart or talented. I forgot where I was going with this.

I love approaching 80, I learn something new every day and forget 5 other things.

I think I'll just put an "Out of Order" sticker on my forehead and call it a day.

Just remember, once you're over the hill you begin to pick up speed.

Having plans sounds like a good idea until you have to put on clothes and leave the house.

It's weird being the same age as old people.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be older...this is not what I expected.

Life is like a helicopter. I don't know how to operate a helicopter.

It's probably my age that tricks people into thinking I'm an adult.

Never sing in the shower! Singing leads to dancing, dancing leads to slipping, and slipping leads to paramedics seeing you naked. So, remember, don't sing!

I see people about my age mountain climbing; I feel good getting my leg through my underwear without losing my balance.

I'm at that age where my mind still thinks I'm 29, my humor suggests I'm 12, while my body mostly keeps asking if I'm sure I'm not dead yet.

You don't realize how old you are until you sit on the floor and then try to get back up.

We all get heavier as we get older, because there's a lot more information in our heads. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Re Genuine Nikon Batteries:
Nikon support has several pages dedicated to 'How to identify real from fake'
It is not easy , resorting to things like comparing type faces etc.
Third party Batteries like B&H's 'Watson' line (and others) are not trying to fool anyone.

The safest bet is to buy from a well known source, a Local Camera store or B&H
I generally buy several new manufacturer's batteries when I buy a new camera hen I'm set.
Some folks report good results with third party batteries.
Just don't buy on Ebay where you just don't know exactly what you are getting.

Nikon stopped making my battery and my camera shop just sells third party. That leaves eBay.
