A follow-up question on LightRoom and Canon DPP: once you have 10k photos in LR and decide you no longer wish to continue with the $10/mo; can you have access to your library on LR from Canon DPP? (Retirement is in my future and I am downsizing my monthly expenses!) I also think this info might help others making this decision. Thanks!

Repeating and adding to what others have written......

They may not even be JPEGs. They may be only low grade previews. Words "uploading" and "downloading" can be confusing. Lightroom does not use those. "Importing" is the Lightroom word for getting your pictures into your computer.

The usual process is to insert your card in your computer, open the Import screen, pick the pictures you want, pick one of the choices at the top center and finish on the right panel with various naming and storage options.

If you select "Add" it will put references and previews in your catalog but your image files remain at the source, in this case the card. You have to pick "Copy" witch puts the files on your computer AND makes previews for the the catalog.

You may be able to retrieve your files. Formating the card does not really delete the data. It only removes the table that locates the data. If you used the card again, you may have "over written" some of the files. If not, they may all still be there.

To get them back you can google for "SD card file recovery" and find the tools and techniques to do that.[/quote]

Consider sending your defective lens to Canon service to request an evaluation and a quote for repair. Then you will have factual info in your hands to help with a decision.

Thanks, you are so right! Sending it out today!

Excellent question - following this thread. I have a Canon EF 100-400 4.5-5.6L IS lens that is having a few intermittent issues. I have been dragging my feet about sending it back to Canon for them to repair. My local camera shop said that it will cost a lot to repair it but Canon repair is my best option. Several folks have suggested I just trade it in for the Mark II.
I am wondering if it is best option for me to have Canon service it if it is a simple fix or quote a repair price and options if it is not a simple fix ... my next real need for the lens isnโ€™t until early January, so I can afford the time. Hmmm ...

Southeastern New Hampshire reporting in! Muted colors roadside in most areas with early leaf drop just west of here due to heavy rain and wind as trees approached peak color season. We are approaching a late peak this week in the southeast but the colors are dull compared to last years. Vines and low understory growth on Plum Island in Massachusetts was in full vivid color last week as plums, crabs and myrtle berries were ripening and juvenile Cedar Waxwings and Rosebreasted Grosbeaks attacked them in a feeding frenzy. There is still a lot of colorful fruit on the bushes as the foliage begins to dry and drop. Good luck!

LightRoom CC continues to be my go to for cropping and for camera and lens adjustments and I use the LightRoom and Photoshop Apps on my iPhone 7 Plus when traveling after uploading my photos from their SD card. I prefer to use a separate desktop file to move my photos from LR on the Mac for emailing and other catalog needs. I use the Photos App for cataloging on the iPhone. This convoluted system works best for me because I truly believe that the more time I spend behind the lens using manual settings in the field, the less time I will spend processing photos inside ...

General response for using mobil devices for photo processing ... I have a 2012 iPad that I was able to purchase an SD card reader for and it worked great. JPEG files went to the photos app and I could move to LightRoom Mobil App. Recently, I purchased an iPhone 7 plus and at the Apple Store picked up the lightening SD card reader. I downloaded my SD card to Photos and imported the best photos to LightRoom Mobil. When I processed the photos in LR they were my RAW files! (In camera I save my images using both jpeg and raw.)

That last bit of advice is good advice for this photographer! I keep telling myself that as a novice I still need to get a minimum of 20 hours of photo work in a week to get to that point where most things will come automatic. I think the 10,000 hours of practice principle applies to photography as well.

Photography can be confusing as you begin to learn about it. Why would someone need a "fast" lens?? Can't aperture control all?? When we shoot we use both aperture and shutter speed to obtain the image we want. Which one is more important is based on the type of image you are shooting. For a landscape shot, aperture might be more important as you want to achieve a great depth of field, sharpness from front to back, but if on a tripod when shooting shutter speed may not matter as much (but can matter in some cases). If you decide to hand-hold the camera in early morning light (which I would not recommend) then shutter speed may matter more than aperture setting; in that case you would set your aperture to the widest possible setting (depending on how fast your lens is and how much of the scene should be sharp) so that your shutter speed is as fast as it needs to be for that specific shoot but you will still need to consider the aperture setting. I consider the whole aperture-shutter-ISO thing like a dance with many steps and possibilities. You need to assess the situation and then choose accordingly for your vision in each situation. Over time, you'll be able to do this without much effort involved as your brain will check out what is happening and make those decisions almost automatically. To get to this state you need to shoot lots of images and I mean a lot of them. Last year I shot a lot of wildlife and shot about 20,000 images, many of course in multiples to be able to pick the best image. This year so far I've shot about 9,000 images (not so many birds in flight). Shooting a lot provides a good education overall in how to use your camera and all of its tools and is essential to being a good photographer.

Thank you for replying ... I don't consider making a strategic decision based on need for the equipment a mistake. Some of these connection errors are simply dirty connections or firmware issues. It is always best to attempt the simplest course of action first and then look to sending the equipment in to the manufacturer.

My take on your main mistake was in not sending it as soon as you got the shipping materials. Now with only a short time before your trip you might not get it back in time unless you want to pay the rather higher overnight shipping charges.

Thankfully I don't have to worry about that kind of problem, I live 21 miles from one of their main service centers and can drive there in aprx 1/2 hour to drop off and pick up.

Thanks for the update! This info is very helpful!

I can't speak specifically to the 100-400 mkl.
When Canon runs out of one part, any part, they term a lens, camera, printer etc to be OUT OF SERVICE LIFE(oosl) and will no longer work on them. They might do an exterior clean, but WILL NOT go inside it. The problem becomes if they break/ruin something in/on the lens/camera, they no longer have the ability to fix it and would be responsible for replacing it with new product you may not want, thus you'll be very unhappy.
I've never sent them oosl equipment because they've told me on the phone NOT to.
Have you sent in oosl equipment that required disassembly and they repaired it internally??

Update:
I just called CPS and the good news is that the 100-400 mkl is STILL IN service life, so any repair can still be performed.
But they DID reassure that once oosl, Canon will ONLY do maintance which is limited to "clean and lube", but NO repairs! That's both for lenses and cameras.

Do you have personal experience with them refusing to work on a lens or camera that they have updated to Mark 11? My 24-70mm Mark 11 by Canon is a newer lens and they worked on my lens, a non-warranty covered problem, free of charge and returned it to me in due course. I connected with them two weeks ago about my original problem, decreased focus capabilities at 100 mm, and they sent me the shipping documents. It seems to me that they planned to take a look at my lens ... I chose to delay sending it in because I needed it and the lens problems are becoming worse. Please let us all know if a mfg is refusing to work on one of its best lenses.

I don't think Canon will work on that lens. It's likely out of service life by now, and if so, they probably won't touch it!!!

Thanks so very much ... I'll call them first thing in the morning.

I would definitely call the Canon Customer support line and discuss this problem with them-especially considering how close your trip is. They might be able to help you solve this without sending the lens in, though I believe that will ultimately be the solution. Good luck with this, and please, keep us posted.

That sounds like a "send the Lens in to Canon" type of repair job. I have a trip coming up in two weeks to Banff and want to have access to my 400 mm capabilities.

It's possible you could have a flex circuit inside the lens, starting to fail. Could be intermittently interrupting communication and hanging everything up.

Thanks, I will connect with Canon about this issue. I had the camera and lens at my local reputable camera shop and they said it was up to date and they cleaned the camera connections again. But if they can't replicate the problem while it is in their hands, it is really hard for them to trouble shoot. My clue to it being the Lens and not the Camera is that it doesn't happen with my 24-70mm Canon L Lens.

The 7DII had one firmware update specifically for AF issues. Have you confirmed you have the most current updates applied to the camera? If yes, you should consult Canon as there should be now issues in using these two models together.
