>I always know what camera AND lens(es) to take.

I have two Canon 5Ds. One has a 50mm 1.8. The other a 28-135. I usually carry the 28-135 outdoors during the day, the other for indoors /night.

If I'm in my car I have a bag with a 70-200 f4 and a 70-300.
If I'm on foot, I have one camera with the 70-200 on it and a 35 in my pocket. If I'm at a field trial, I have the 70-300 on my camera plus either the 50 or the 35 in my pocket. If a dog's running, the 70-300: if pointing, whichever prime.

I also have my first digital, a 40d which I never use. It lives in a drawer in my office along with a bunch of lens from when I had GAS attacks early on. Off the top of my head, I can't tell you what they are but at least a half dozen. Harry

Well, not "every" because I never did. Before or after. Or in my post processing. And I had surgery on both eyes. I noticed a much larger difference when I got glasses. In sharpness that is. Harry

I bought this camera about 1.5 years ago at B&H, thinking that it would be a great camera.
I have only used it for events. I keep it very secure when not in use, and I take care of it like a baby, and this is applicable to all of my equipment.

About 30 days ago, I started hearing a click-click sound inside. I turned if off, then back on, removed the battery, then it would work for 20 minutes and the clicking sound started again. Then the screen would go black and would only focus on very bright lights. I would restart it, again to 20 minutes of work.
I called sony, they told me to reboot it for 30 seconds and update the software, I did.

The same thing happened again. I am so frustrated.
I called sony again, they will not honor the warranty because it's past the year (just a couple of months).

The first time I called they said they would do an exception and cover it, then when I called again the Filipino lady that answered said that they will not cover it.

She would not give me the number to public relations and she was closed-minded and did not really know anything other than saying no.

I am so frustrated, I paid about 2500.00 for this camera, and now it's a piece of junk.

Please help! Anybody with a similar experience?
I have NEVER had this experience with my CANON cameras!!

You were always satisfied with Canon and yet you bought a Sony. One question - "Have you learned anything ?"

You probably want a 70-200 f/2.8 lens. The Tamron version is great, as are the more expensive Nikon options.

Fine if you can handle the weight. If not, you might think of the somewhat slower (and lighter) 70-300. Harry PS I shoot with both lens on a Canon, both will give you an OK image with the 70-200 somewhat better. It's a beast to carry though, so maybe rent both and see which you like the best overall. I'm 90 mydamnself and on a long shoot would probably go with the 300 unless I felt that I just had to have that 2.8! Since you're already shooting an f4, the 300 just might do you. What do you think Paul? Harry

Sorry for the smart mouth answer above. I apologize to the OP and to the whole community.

Now, something more in keeping with the topic. I shoot Canon and I have a 70-300mm and a 1.4 extender. That and my feet have always been enough to meet my needs. My old friend pro Charlie Harbutt used a normal Leica lens for everything. And in spite of that, he did manage to take a few saleable images here and there. <g> Harry PS To the OP - you have a 300 and a 500, why the need for a 400? Dunno what other lens you have but if it was me, I'd go for maybe a 35 or a 50.

I am not a professional, but avid prosumer. I estimate that I have taken 200,000 to 250,000 photos. Most of these are digital. With film I was much more judicious. In film days, a one week trip would produce 300 or so photos. With digital the same trip would produce 3,000 photos (with the vast majority being trashed). A pro friend estimates 1.5 million. How about you?

A whole lot. Harry

"This computer, configured with 32 gb ram (which I consider minimum for most photo editing programs)'"

You (other) guys and your 16gb of ram amuse me. Gene is correct, you need 32 at least. (imho)

I wouldn't consider any less than 32 and frankly prefer 64. It's not like ram is a multimillion dollar addition, so get 32 or 64. I never tried 128 but it probably "vouldn't hoit." >g< Harry PS With 64, I often run two programs at once. But not photo editing programs obviously.

Currently I have a FF camera body, 2 lenses that will reach 300mm and 1 with a 500mm reach. I only print up to 13x19 and don't need billboard size images (yet).

Which would be better?:

1. A x1.4 extender will provide a 420mm reach on the 300mm lens with a 1 stop lose of light.
or
2. Setting the FF to Crop mode will provide 450mm reach on the 300mm lens without light lose, but a lose of pixels.
or
3. Shooting at FF and cropping to the same proportions as in crop mode.

I can test 2 and 3, but I don't want to spend several hundred dollars for a teleconverter.

Thanks

Not this again! 2 and 3 change the sight picture but they do NOT change the lens. "Reach" is a physical thing and will not be changed by cropping. Think about it. If you think I'm wrong, (1) measure your penis. (2) take a picture of it and crop it. (3) remeasure your penis and (4) tell us how much bigger your penis is now. ROFLMFAO Harry

If cost is not an issue, most will advise 32-64GB RAM to future proof your purchase.

When I first got a PC (after years of working on a mainframe) I got 16mg of RAM. I soon found that I needed more so added to 32. Now my PC has 64 and works just fine. RAM is cheap, no need to stint. OTOH, I never saw a need for 128 but who knows what the future holds? [Not much for me as I'm 91. :-) ] Harry

I'm sorry but that's just wrong. It will give you the picture but not the length. Do you think that cropping increases the length of the lens from 300 to 450? Really, do you? If so, then just crop it and you'll be happy. Wrong but happy! Harry PS Don't fret, I've been in that wrong but happy mode mydamnself. Mostly involving sex not photography though.

>Not sure what to do when new car time comes around.

LOL My advice would be to buy a used Model T. Not too many Bs and Ws there.

BTW, I inheirited my uncle's '41 Pontiac after the war. Six wheels (counting the steering wheel and a spare) plus a radio. That simple enough or is a radio too advanced for you? If you could find one like it, you could remove the radio, pick up a few years on the T. :-)
