Got more than I realized in a short walk at Morris Arboretum wetlands this morning before the rains came. There are a few here that I haven't been able to ID. Was surprised by the assassin bug (I guess that's how it's prey feels!!) which was hiding in a Milkweed flower, and by Googling for a "green-eyed wasp" and finding out that was really it's name. The spider is extremely small - the flower bud it's in is no more than an inch in diameter. The hoverfly is also pretty small. And, "don't know" is a pretty neat looking bug.
Is this really a wooly aphid? This bug is really small and something I've never seen before. I Googled "small white 2-winged insect" and one of the pictures that came back indicated it might be this aphid.
I was cleaning up some old files and came across this image from 3 years ago from a public garden in the middle of a neighborhood in NW Philadelphia. Been trying to figure out whether it's a fly or bee and haven't had any success in obtaining an answer from Google or BG. Anyone have an idea what we're looking at here? Incidentally, I'm pretty sure that I did not have a macro lens on the camera.
Its the larva of a Chrysomelid beetle (i.e., leaf beetle). Something like this: https://bugguide.net/node/view/893667 . They are plant eaters. I am sort of wondering if it is parasitized, since the color is pretty strange.
Thanks Mark. I followed your BugGuide link and then went up one level and found this, which looks more like the larva in my image: https://bugguide.net/node/view/837718. I can't say for certain that it was on a milkweed plant, but I was in an area where that's the overwhelming vegetation.
I was walking in the wetlands of the Morris Arboretum in Philadelphia yesterday when I spotted this guy. Been all over the internet this morning and about the only thing I think I learned was that it might be a gastropod? Wondering if any of you insect smart folks might have a idea of what this creature is?
