Going for a lovely walk on a beautiful winter's day in the Brisbane Ranges national park.
The park is about 80km south west of Melbourne Australia.

Always looking to improve my photography, comments welcome.

Also, for a unique Aussie experience - try to go to an AFL (Australian Football League) game.
Tickets are only about A$25 each and it is a unique experience - closest thing to it for speed, aggression, physicality and excitement in my opinion is ice hockey.
There are two teams based in Sydney and games are usually played on weekends.

In Sydney can I suggest that you catch the ferry to Manly (from Circular Quay). It will take you all the way to the Heads (opening of Sydney Harbour to the ocean). A short walk through the mall in Manly and you will be at the beach. The ferry ride is lovely with lots of opportunities to take water shots.
A great ride during the day or night.

Just to stick my 2 cents in I think that US movie makers may use 'artistic license' and transplant the Kookaburra laugh to the jungle for 'atmosphere'.

Hmm. I must be cockeyed - not a good thing for a would-be photographer.

Hi all. Thanks for the comments.

Ron, thanks for the critique.
Funny thing is that I lined up the spires on top of the tower to the grid and thought they were vertical. SO I guess it is a bit of an illusion that either the building is not straight or the spires. Go Figure.

Thanks all.

Interesting comments. I think al lot has to do with the different brand of lens.
The camera was on a tripod and both shots were taken within minutes of each other. Any change in camera position would only be due to slight movement when changing lens.
Neither lens had any kind of filter on them (not even UV).

Colour fringing (I assume this is where you see a band of colour on an edge) - I can see it when I zoom right in - is this a property of the lens? Is this one of the things that a better quality lens would eliminate?

Regarding the Tamron lens - I bought it on ebay. It was really well priced. All of the reviews I read rated it very highly especially in the image stabilisation / sharpness area. If fact you can see the difference between having it turned on and off when looking through the viewfinder.
I will make it a rule to increase shutter speed for this kind of shot but I was impressed with how clear the hair on the Koala's ears are.

Thanks again Hedghoggers again for all the advice and info.

Hi all,
You may remember that I have posted twice asking why my photos arn't sharp.
I got heaps of good advice.

Here aer a couple of photos to show what I have learn't.
Basically it has a lot to do with technique.
The first two photos were taken with the camera (Canon 60d) mounted on a tripod.
Both shots were taken with the mirror up and the self timer set to reduce camera movement.
The first is using the EF 75-300mm kit lens (this lens has no image stabilisation).
The second was taken with a Tamron SP70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di VC USD (the image stabilisation was turned off).

In my opinion both shots are equally sharp.
It interesting to note there is some colour variation.
Also both shots were with Aperture priority (F8) ISO 250. The Canon selected 1/400 the Tamron 1/250.
The Canon is 58mm diameter and the Tamron is 62mm diameter. Why would the Canon lens need less light?

The last shot of the Koala was taken with the Tamron with image stabilisation on. Speed was 1/100 F8 at 300mm magnification.
I thik it is also pretty sharp. I never would have got such a sharp shot with the unstabilised Canon lens.
