thanks for the photos, nicely done. i've been to shiloh, i found it eerily silent, no insect sounds, no people sounds, it seemed as if the planet knows and respects this killing field. the wrought iron gates at the entrance are wonderous works of art.

My wife and I also found the grounds to be solemnly quiet as if all things physical are paying homage to those whose sacrifices shall not, will not be forgotten... an extended moment of silence, if you will.

Those stats are staggering! Had no clue. What's difficult to fathom is that this is when rifles were single shot, canons had to be manually re-loaded, and hand to hand combat took so many.

We owe a huge debt to our ancestors. My grandfather fought in the Spanish American War. Never came home until 4 years later. His photos were stunning - especially with 1,500+ soldiers on horseback!

Thanks, GB!!

It's sickening to think that the Civil War claimed 1,100,000 casualties, with 620,000 deaths. Staggering, indeed.

I waited for about an hour for it to fly so I could at least attempt to take a BIF photo. No such luck. A Park Ranger
said that since the young have left the nest, the adults do not roost there but visit and stand guard over the nest to maintain territorial rights.

Thanks for the info - my wife studies the Civil War and wants to visit all the sites - this will help a lot :)

Sadly, it wasn't until President Lincoln formally dedicated the National Cemetery at Gettysburg in 1863 that the government set aside land to bury fallen soldiers. Until that time, it was family and friends who retrieved corpses for formal burial. Otherwise, their final resting places were exactly where they fell.

See any ghosts?

No, but there was an unnerving "presence" in the cemetery and battlegrounds.

Nice set - thanks for sharing.

You're welcome. Side Note:The National Park Service preserves, maintains and "shares" with the public over 70 Civil War historical sites.

While meandering through this peaceful park on a self-guided auto tour, it's hard to imagine that 110,000 soldiers were engaged in one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War, sustaining over 23,000 casualties. The National Cemetery is the final resting place for 3,584 Civil War dead, 2,359 of them unknown.

Great photo showing that these massive concrete and steel bridges are literally bolted to the canyon walls!!. Had an opportunity to visit northern AZ a few years back... walked to the middle of that bridge to get a bird's eye view of the dam. Although the fence is built to "prison" standards, there were vertical slots provided that were large enough for camera lenses to get unobstructed pictures of the dam and lake. Unfortunately, I didn't have a wide enough lens to fully capture such a majestic view.
