so we take photos of them. Tell me, who can't resist the temptation to take photos of interesting buildings? I can't imagine the number of miles I've put on my cars over the years hunting old or interesting buildings.

ALL - Good looking photos
You're telling me you actually "handheld" that shot for 4 seconds?
Now that's one steady guy or is your name "GITZO"

Just an additional thought --
Not storing the camera with such a long heavy lens is of course the right practice
But what when using a tripod --
From what I can see in your photo I would sure want to employ the services of a lens collar

PS: My Canon 100/400 lens weighing just about the same as your lens came from Canon with a lens collar --
To eliminate future high-cost repairs --- Please Consider Using One!!!!!

Sounds like the Mgr. at Nikon gave you good advice
I normally keep a 35mm lens on my camera when stored in the camera bag

VERY well done a lot of fine effort on your part

The 1.4III works extremely well with the 100/400II & the 135L which I finally got around to using.

I don't see any aspect of the flower in sharp focus. Therefore, I don't see a justification of spending any time editing around the edges of an out of focus subject. The colors are nice, just the missing details that suffer. Alas, the colorspace is not sRGB, so what you intended in the color tone is lost / unknown when viewed by others.

I fully agree with your comments

My most critical comment ------
Trust you didn't devote a hell of a lot of time to this project

Should every thread be a physics lecture? If so, then this forum would die quickly.

Some recommended software to try. Some shared their experiences with cameras they own. The OP did not initially mention already owning a D850. I suggested if one looks in that direction, a newer camera might be a better choice. Then you throw in a joke or two. This is how people interact with each other on this site. It makes the site more interesting. Some threads do deteriorate into stupidity. You have to take the bad with the good, and there is a lot of good here.

So the guy already owned an 850 --
The bottom line for me then is that all this was no more than a waste of my time & effort
But just the same --- A fun waste of my time

I own a Nikon D850. I'm not going to upgrade, or at least I think I'm not going to upgrade. I need compatibility with a stable of older lenses. I can't see spending what it would cost to buy an entire new system at my age on retirement income. If I were younger and looking to buy a new camera, it would definitely be mirrorless. I might even look at options other than Nikon.

With my 5Ds I'm in full agreement & will continue to use the camera as long as it operates & can be repaired at a reasonable cost.. Canon assures me they will support maintaining the camera, including its repair until 2028 --
If I purchase any new camera after the 5Ds, it will of course be mirrorless.

What good is pixel resolution when your camera still has a mirror?

Easy ---- Only if you have one
Unbolt the lens & use the mirror to comb your hair, brush your teeth, or see who is gaining on you

The D850 is a fine 2017 camera. The IQ is unsurpassed, essentially the same as their newer 45 megapixel mirrorless cameras, of which you can chose from three, Z7 ii, Z8 and Z9. The Z cameras run circles around the D850 in terms of speed and features, so why spend money on the old camera? Why not move into the present if you're going to buy a new camera?

The only advantage I see in the older camera is that it will autofocus with the very old screw drive lenses, some of which are actually decent. If you don't own or plan to use any of those, there is no advantage except perhaps price. If you find that you have to buy some full frame lenses to go along with a full frame camera, then the Z lenses are the best that Nikon has to offer, and you really need the best you can afford with a camera that has a high pixel count. Think about how far you would want to take this.

Look we are not in disagreement -
However only "IF" as you said: "The Z cameras run circles around the D850 in terms of speed and features, so why spend money on the old camera? Why not move into the present if you're going to buy a new camera?
ONLY - If those features are important -- And for the most part they are not important to me --
However, this fellow may see them as critical features
If not---
Then purchase a truly great camera for far less

Nothing should make you feel inferior about your equipment except the mirror.

I like mirrors & Prime lenses & I like full-sized sensors with as many Pixels as Canon can get on it

And when I'm viewing on the PC I for sure can see the difference between an image from my 5D2 & my 5Ds

And I can see the difference on "some" but you're right not all -- But most of my large prints

So Pixels do matter - For the most part

PS: For the fellow that started this thread - "IF" you have the $$ & since the camera companies have convinced many of us that "Mirrorless" is better so the 850 is selling for much less then it's really worth -- BUY IT!!!

Todays funny - reminds me of the 100/200 ft. medieval tower we slowly climbed up in Germany -- my idea was to take some great photos - which we did - At the top collecting a 5 or so euro fee for all that effort was this VERY large German Matron -- Assume there had to be a secret Elevator somewhere
She did not know any more English as I did German -- She did of course know why I greeted her as Rapunzel --
We all had a short friendly laugh
