I really like #5. You could further crop it to where only the vertical part of the branch is showing. Either way it's a good capture of nature.

Of course if you're shooting the pole star* it doesn't move much, but most people shoot in other directions. My 15 second example above was shot at about 45 degrees North latitude, but it's really the latitude (declination) of the star that counts, not the latitude of the camera.

* The "pole star" (Polaris, also known as the North Star) is not quite on the pole. It's approximately 0.7 degrees away from the pole. There is no comparable bright star at the southern pole.

I agree...most people don't realize that it is your latitude and where you point the camera in the sky that matters regarding the angular rate of the apparent star movement. Stars above the equator appear to move fastest while the north and South Pole areas appear considerably slower. So the exposure time can vary a lot when trying to minimize star trails. And again the other big factor is the lense FOV. Wide angle lenses take awhile to have the star move across their FOV while telephoto lenses see a smaller portion of the sky and experience shorter/quicker transversing times.... translated to mean your exposure time can be longer with wide angle lenses.

Cats rule, dogs drool!
I'd be afraid of those claws too.

In this example I think bringing out the character of the sky by HDR was done well. #1 has much more 'character' than #2.

Agree totally!

Here is an HDR that I did not too long ago. It does not look over done.

I like this shot. Not over done at all.
Would be interesting to see the picture before HDR!

Respectfully, Steve, I do not agree. Here are two examples of HDR not 'over-cooked' - a little finesse goes a long way.

Great examples rjay...what did the originals look like?

South Island is by far the most scenic. Trip from Queensland to Milford Sound and back is a full day. Lake Tekapo enroute to Mt Cook has beautiful greenish blue water from glacier runoff. I'd fly into Christchurch, drive to Mt Cook, spend the night, drive to Queensland and sightsee along the way. Then take the trip to Milford Sound - either drive or take a tour bus (limits your opportunity to shoot landscapes). Spent the next day around Queensland and then fly out from there. I spent eight days last year driving around the lower part of the South Island. Would like to go back.
Enjoy.

I don't give a RRR about common practice, it makes a bad portrait.

It bothers me too but I like the left ear orientation with the corner of the frame. Still a nice photo.
