What's that thing that looks like a clamp in the remote kit?

It is a strain relief when camera is on a tripod and you have one or two cables plugged into the side. You must open up both flaps to use it even if there is only one cable connected.

There are pictures of it's use in one of the online folders of the Sony web site.

Oops....... I was thinking of the clamp like thing that came with the camera. This remote also works with all the new Alpha cameras with a Multi Port connector.

In the remote kit, the receiver slides into this clamp and then can be mounted to the tripod so the wire and receiver do not have to blow in the wind.

I just purchased this Sony camera and am wondering if any UHH person knows where I can obtain a more complete manual then the one that came with the camera. The model 3 is available, not the 4.Guess my other question would be, would the 3 manual work in a pinch? Thanks for any help. (I normally use my 50D Canon, but wanted a small P&S for my pocket so I am not familiar with Sony cameras.)

I have a couple suggestions for you.

First, you are going to need a super high speed memory card if you want to shoot slow motion video.

At 960 frames per second, for the 4 second record 160 second playback video, there is a long processing time, in the camera, before writing to the card. Do not interrupt this processing or you will lose your video.

You need to download from the Sony site the latest version of "Image Data Converter" to make full use of the beautiful RAW files.

I suggest buying a battery charger and a couple extra batteries so you can charge while using the camera.

Last, the Sony RMT-VP1K remote is really handy and gives you complete control of the camera, including zoom, with its receiver plugged into the cameras multi port.

Enjoy, it is a fun little camera.

Got a flash light? Shine the light, focus and then lock the focus.

I really like the flashlight idea. A red lens to look at camera controls preserving night vision and white for focusing in the dark. Just don't look at the white one!
The built in focus illuminator does not work well at a distance.

How often are you going to need to shoot at ISO 102,400? This camera does not out perform the Nikon D810 at least not according to Tony Northrup. The Nikon out performs the Sony at low ISO where many of us shoot. The base ISO on the Sony is 100. The D810 is 64. Your getting more detail from the Nikon. How much more? Likely a little. Is this significant? Likely not. But for those who think this is hottest thing since pancakes, think again.

I may never use the 102K ISO again but that was not even a consideration when I decided to purchase this camera body..... Mainly I wanted some of the improvements over the A7R that I have been using since it was released.

what lens are you using?

I have a Zeiss FF 24-70mm, a Sony FF 24-240, and several Sony and Sigma crop sensor lenses and the Sony adapter. You sacrifice a few pixels with these but there are still plenty left.
I am encouraged by Canon lens use comments and am waiting on an adapter for them as well.
My favorite lens except for the weight is a 50-500mm Sigma lens that has some fantastic built in optical stabilization - I get great shots at 500mm hand held.

Where did you get the camera from? I've had mine on order from B&H for 2 1/2 months and still no ship date?

I ordered the camera about two month before the release date from Amazon.
It was released on Aug 5, it was shipped Aug 6, and I had it Aug 7. The free two day shipping worked really really well!
I think Amazon prime is well worth the money for shopping and then you add all the free video, audio, and other perks........

So would you buy the Camera again?

Without doubt - YES. I have an A7R and this is a major step up from that.

Also have a Nikon D7200, Canon 70D, Alpha 55, and Alpha 77 all of which will probably be gone soon. I will then rely on a pocket Sony and this camera.

Did you happen to shoot any comparisons at a lower ISO just to show how the lighting conditions were? 102K ISO is insane! But amazingly good.

Here is on at ISO 1000, higher than I normally would like to use but it was pretty dark at the time........

To be honest, it is very noisy and lacking fine detail, but ISO 102,000!!!!!!!! Amazing!!
I've seen other cameras that are this noisy at ISO1600.

Agreed..... I did not expect it to be nearly this good.

PJ click store original during download sow we can see the full image.

I tried that twice but UHH did not like the 20.2 MB file size. This has been reduced to 360 ppi and 4.72 MB. We shall see what happens........

The RAW file was 41.4 MB and the TIFF file ended up being 120MB. UHH does not like them either..... ISO 102,400 - f 5.6 - 1/125 sec - Zeiss 24-70mm full frame e mount lens

If you are crazy enough to buy a new α7R II, like me, and go out at night to try out the high ISO settings ( see photo attached ) don't be upset for an ISO 102,400 shot when you look at the image data and it say ISO 65,535. Not to worry.........

Well there happens to be a 187 page booklet of standards for digital images, slightly out dated of course, so see page 181 and it will explain this discrepancy.

My granddaughter. Nice, but a bit over-done.

Very curious........ Did you show the second image to your granddaughter and what did she think of it????

I abandoned PP at version 9 or 10 thinking that most of my results looked like a poorly processed HDR images. Your granddaughter is beautiful in the first image with no need for enhancement........ Just my opinion though!

As at least one other has written, Canon and Nikon make excellent cameras which include a wide variety of lenses and accessories. Many people forget or perhaps don't know about Sony, which has been making digital cameras for (I think) ten years or more. Their full-frame lenses and flashes are (to me) a little on the pricey side, but I have several Sony cameras and several Canon cameras. My favorite Canon is the EOS 5D II. My favorite Sony is the a7R. I suggest you check out Sony before you buy.
As at least one other has written, Canon and Nikon... (show quote)

And for sure check out the Sony α7R II. I got mine on Wednesday and already think it is the best camera I have ever owned.
