Maybe it's just me , but I looked at the download and it appears there is nothing at all in sharp focus. The building roof appears worse than the logo on the side of the truck.

Tripod is probably not the problem - I suspect your AF was turned off or not working at all. The point of focus could actually be much closer to the camera, where we don't even see it. It's not that easy to take a photo using a tripod at f11, 1/160 shutter with a wide / normal lens and get NOTHING in sharp focus.

Do you have any idea how much time I invested to make this happen. lol. I wonder about equipment problems. It might be worthwhile to borrow and try the $100 Canon 50mm prime and see what happens.

For what it is worth, I too have failing eyesight (old fart syndrome), and recently switched from an articulating LCD screen to a fixed screen. It became obvious real quick that I needed a workaround to the sun glare issue.

Was considering getting the matte screen cover the camera manufacturers sell (about $28 for my Canon 7DII), but decided to go with the Hoodman hood loupe. I hate carrying it, but really like what it does. Eliminates the sun issue altogether, and I get much better clarity and magnification for focusing. Seems a bit overpriced for $100 for what you get, but it is a must for a non-articulating screen camera.

My two cents worth, keep the change!

I will check into it. This is not the first time I have had this problem Thanks for the suggestion.

By the way, it looked like a great sunny day up their in Jamestown Pennsylvania. My real question is " are the crappie hitting yet, how about the walleye on lake Pymatuning? And, are they done with the gatehouse?

Sorry to disappoint but I am from Jamestown, SC. Since we are much farther south the Crappie may well be biting but I do not think we have walleye. lol

Thanks for your response and time.

Aside from other suggestions, Obviously you had time to pose each truck, not sure if this would have been practical for you but, I carry with me a 25' & 100' tape measure for estimating construction jobs. If for whatever reason I was unable to achieve focus, I may have resorted to the tried and true, physically measure the distance and set that on my lens distance scale less a scoche.
BTW, although I can't enlarge them on screen, they look pretty good.

The curse of working with inferior equipment is that there is not a distance scale on my kit lens. Is there another way to determine distance on the lens that I am unaware of?

Thanks Jerry,I know. I was referring to the download & not being checked...I should have been more clear. But then just realized it was there to download. It's gotta be Monday, or maybe the snow falling has me off my rocker.

I added the d/l after the original post. You may have seen the post and commented before hand and gone back later and it had been added.

Glad you finally posted an image. After I wasted my time sounding foolish trying to figure out what you were describing. Yes, the focus was on the roof edge or building wall. File is not really large in dimensions.

I would image you received plenty of good suggestions.

I have received several good ideas. Sorry you felt foolish. Never my intent. It happens so often to me that Senior Moments have become a way of life. Thanks for taking the time to post.

go on Amazon.com and buy an "eye cup" it fits on the view finder on your camera. (not the live screen) when you put your eye against it, you block out all the glare and you can use the focus box in the view finder. I have a similar problem with my glasses when I am shooting outside. So if I am shooting outside I put on the eye cup and take off my glasses. Works great.

A great thought and, I already happen to have one and did not think to use it. I was confident I had things right. Guess I should not have been so confident. I would much prefer to shoot without my glasses. I have to place my trust in the camera focusing system since I am unable to adjust the diopter in the viewfinder sufficiently to bring it into focus.

Looks like a bright day and good lighting. Why use spot focus?

I was specifically interested in getting the logo on the door of the truck sharp. Not! Embarrassing moment.

Thanks for the thoughts. I used the tripod primarily to ensure that I got the exact same shot for all four trucks. At least that was my thought. lol I honestly do not think that a darn one of them is in focus.

I will give due consideration to all suggestions and strive to do better if there is a next time. As far as new technology goes I'm afraid that also requires new technology dollars. I will give it a look.

Thanks for all the input.

I have never done any searching, but I would bet that there are some pretty neat hoods out there that could attach nicely to a dslr and be thrown over your head. Maybe even made out of dark cloth or nylon?

I was thinking about a hood over the screen as a possibility. Has anyone used one of those?

Cataracts are a bitch for sure. Had both my eyes done last April, wow what a difference that made! Is it expensive for you to have the operations done on your eyes? We have OAS (same as your SS) here in Canada and because of that I got my operations done for free, best thing since sliced bread. No more glasses and my color perception improved as well. Now I need a knee replacement but going to wait a little before doing that surgery.
As others have suggested, a taller tripod would help you more than you may realize but on SS forces us to make value choices, that I do understand.
Best regards, Garth

I should have had a taller tripod.

Just the same I had trouble seeing the green spot focus point in the viewfinder which allowed me to misfocus along with possible parallax because of the tripod height.

I could not use Live View due to the sunlight in the area.

That was the only position I could use to get the composition that we wanted.

A lower shutter speed and higher f stop may have mitigated the problem.

Just the same most of my problems would have been insignificant if I could have seen the screen to use live view to focus.

Tripod, f stop, shutter speed are all technical failures on my part. Still I need to be able to see the green focus point in the view finder or be able to use the screen to focus with live view.

Any suggestions how to mitigate these problems?

Lower shutter speed and higher f stop would have helped.
