I think often the the poster is chastised because the relevant prior thread is fairly recent. But I agree even so there is no call to give them grief when all that is required is a cite to the relevant postings.

The real truth here is that these forums attract many people who use them to belittle others and flaunt their own presumed superiority, and also those people just looking for a fight. It is best to turn a deaf ear to them and post what you like. Their are also many on these forums who are pleasant and helpful. When you go out into the woods you don't know if you will encounter a squirrel or a grizzly bear.

Re the tulips. The yellow one obviously, but the others? They look so different. But then a lot of these pix were shot in Holland Michigan. I will try not to send obvious duplicates.

What you call a Hydrangea looks to me like a carnation. I realize I am broadcasting my ignorance on the subject, but sometimes the best way to learn is to swallow your pride and expose your vulnerability.

The thread is a year old.

Anything new to add would be better served by starting a new one.

If this thread is so old as to be without value, why respond to it?? "You shouldn't add to an old thread, start a new thread instead". "You shouldn't start a new thread on this subject as it was covered in an old thread". As pointed out recently in another old thread, you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.

Why? If you start a new one in the same topic, you get yelled at and berated because it’s been done before and because you didn’t bother to do a search first.

Who cares?

Precisely.

Adjusting the in-camera JPEG settings?

Continuing this idea of the JPEG as an 'output' format with modest opportunities for post-capture editing, consider if you should have your camera do more in-camera processing using the computer inside that camera.

Do you add sharpening in your post software? Do you add saturation or brightening of the exposure? Do you adjust the white balance?

Consider if you should adjust your camera defaults. Canon, Nikon and Sony (and I assume all others) have a 'standard' picture style (Canon) or picture control (Nikon) or picture profile (Sony).

You'll have to find the details in your specific camera manual, but consider increasing the sharpening by +1 over the camera default. Consider +1 for contrast and saturation. If your camera dynamically selects the picture style, force it to use only your updated Standard. See what you think of the results. You can always change it back. The suggestion +1 is a subtle change, you can add more adjustment, if desired.

If you find you tend to 'brighten' your images, consider too using more Exposure Compensation in P / S / T modes, try +0.3 or +0.7. Again, you can always undo this change if you don't like the results.

For sharpening, if your camera is a new model that allows for refined adjustments to Strength, Fineness and Threshold, consider adjusting to a lower number (more fine). For a Canon, consider the adjustments below, similar settings will apply for other brands:

Sharp Strength, default = 3, update to 4
Sharp Fineness, default = 4, update to 2
Sharp Threshold, default = 4, update to 3

Contrast, default = 0, update to 1
Saturation, if default = 0, update to 1 (older Canons have a 0-7 scale and default at 3, update to 4)

Make your judgement / assessment of these changes on your computer monitor, not on your phone and not on the camera's rear LCD. If you have 'typical' things you do to your JPEGs, assess whether these in-camera changes simplify or remove (lessen) the even modest amount of processing you perform on your JPEGs today.

OK I have just made the changes you suggest. Will let you know the results.

I have a dilemma. There's no absolute right answer so let's agree to skip that answer. I'm heading to a beautiful place with landscapes and nature. I have (defined by quality) an A camera and a B camera. I have a extreme wide angle and a zoom with a big focal length range. Which lens would you place on which camera? High winds and lots of hiking so switching back and forth isn't a good idea. Thank you.

I had a similar problem the first time I went to Europe. All of those large palaces and cathedrals screamed for wide angle!! Museum interiors screamed for fast film and fast lens!! Almost no screaming was done for telephoto!! So what I did...I took camera A (a Mamiya/Sekor 1000TL), loaded it with 100 or 200 ASA Kodacolor and my wide angle lens (35mm 2.8 Vivitar), took camera B (a Praktica TTL(?)), loaded it with 800 ASA Kodacolor and my fast lens (50mm 1.4 Mamiya/Sekor) and carried my TP and used it on camera A when TP was needed. It was the best matching of film speed to lens speed, film speed to available light and minimized changing lenses. Of course, the whole ASA factor is no longer relevant, but I would first determine which lens is likely to be used the most, mount it on Camera A, second most on Camera B, and all others whatever seems best at the moment. Hope it all turns out good. Since I am posting this response almost a year later you should have the answer already !

Thanks for the info re updating camera defaults. Definitely going to look into that. I personally hate the idea of post processing, it is almost an admission of your inability to do it right when you take the picture. Plus raw takes up more room. But to each his own.
