I’ve been using the 18-200 as my main lens on my D7100 for a few years and have gotten great quality shots with it. I’ve traveled all over the world with it. It does, however, have one limitation for me; it doesn’t go wide enough. If you’re traveling to cities where structures are very close together you need a wider view. As I’m heading to Europe this summer, I’ve decided to get the Nikon 10-20 4.5. Although a bit slower than the 10-24, it’s much lighter, less than half the price and gets stellar reviews. With that and my 18-200 for the days and my 35mm 1.8 for night I’ll be fully covered. Plus the two smaller lenses weigh just a bit over one pound together. Personally I’d return the 20-24 and get the 10-20. Good luck!

Thanks for your feedback. I think a Nikon 10-20 will find its way into my bag. It gets great reviews, is relatively inexpensive, and will provide me with the coverage I need. Along with my 18-200 I should be good to go.

Again, this is about a 10-20mm wide angle. The rx100 only goes to 28mm, which is the same as the Lens I already own. We will have a LUMIX pocket camera with us.

My wife will have her LUMIX P&S which takes surprising good quality photos. There are times when we just take that with us. But it too does not go wide enough, hence the desire for a wider angle lens for the Nikon.

I’m heading to Europe for a river cruise this summer. I’ll be taking my Nikon D7100 with a Nikon 18-200 plus a Nikon 35mm 1.8 for night shots. I feel that I need something wider than 18mm (28 on my dx body) for shots in crowded cities. I am considering the Nikor 10mm. It’s very small so I can stuff it in a pocket. Any thoughts or suggestions. I’ll be going from Prague to Budapest. Thanks.

The same as I feel about the Catholics during the Spanish Inquisition who did the same thing. Fanaticism run amok. BTW, there should be a comma after fanatic, not a period. I'm a fanatic about grammar and punctuation. Nobody dies.

It is, in fact, religious fanatics like yourself that are the problem. By the way, allah is just the word God in a different language. It is better to say nothing and have people think you're a fool than to speak and prove it!

Thank you but the 55-300 is not on the list.

Will my Nikon 55-300 work with a Teleconverter and if so which would be the best and most cost effective for it? I am heading to Alaska and would like a bit more reach.

The only problem with the Canon IS is that they are very expensive and use batteries. That means one more problem; they are heavy. If money and weight are not an issue for you then go for it. Personally, carrying my SLR, a flash, extra lens and some other basic stuff is more than enough weight. My Vortex weigh about 22 oz. An more than that and something would have to go. As someone said earlier, the stuff you are carrying gains weight during the day.

I just bought a new pair for my trips to SE Asia and Alaska. I did endless research and ultimately purchased the Vortex Diamondback 10 x42. They are in the $200-250 range. While you can spend a whole lot more, these were the best bang for the buck and are often compared to far more expensive units. They are completely water and fog proof and Vortex has the best warranty in the business. They are located in Wisconsin and have an amazing customer service department who will answer any questions you may have. By the way, I bought mine from B&H who had the best price and were a pleasure to deal with.

FYI- I lived in Wisconsin for a few years and there are plenty of guys like the one who first responded to you. Generally angry and in need of someone to take it out on. Most reasonable people know there is no such thing as a stupid question. Take him with a grain of salt.

Good luck!

I bought my 7100 with the Nikon 18-200 and could not be happier. It's the perfect travel lens. Not too big, not to heavy and enough focal coverage for most of what I shoot. I also bought a Nikon 35mm 1.8 for lower light use. While I own a 55-300 I rarely use it and don't travel with it. When I travel (Japan last summer, SE Asia next month) I take just the two lenses and am good to go. Whatever you decide you'll love the 7100. Good luck

I will be traveling to Alaska next August. On all my other trips I've taken my D7100 with 18-200 plus my 35mm 1.8. For my Alaska trip I'll be adding my 55-300. I would also suggest a tripod if you can deal with more weight. Lastly, a good pair of binoculars is a must have for me. I just bough the Vortex Diamondback 10x42.

I've taken a flash and monopod on past trips to China and Japan and never used them. One more suggestion. Take an iPad so you can download your photos each day. That way you have a backup should a card fail.better safe than sorry.
