I like the subject of your photos and I think they are well taken. I find the large size of your watermark distracting when viewing the photos, but maybe that's just me.

My 18-200 VR slowly started to refuse to focus in the 150 to 200 zoom range. Since I had already had it repaired once (for a bad internal ribbon connector) I ditched it and got another copy (used - local purchase.). It works fine and focuses through the entire zoom range. I really love the 18-200 lens. It is on my D7100 80% of the time. Good luck with getting yours working or replaced.

I can't see where the butterfly is hiding his zoom lens.

I am sure you will like your 200-500. It will provide you with sharp photos when you do your part. I use mine at f8 or f11 most of the time when I am shooting birds if flight hand held. Also keep the shutter speed at 1000 or more. I use a Nikon D=7000 and a D-800. Go out and shoot that puppy to see what it will do. You might be surprised at the amount of keepers you get. Happy shooting.

Thanks for the good advice.

I have that lens and love it. I used the following procedure to check out my copy.

PS I don't consider it a cheap lens

Thanks for the link. Some good advice there

Just received my new Nikkor 200-500 mm f:5.6 lens from Adorama. While some say this is a "cheap" telephoto, it is by far my largest outlay of funds yet for photography. I know that there can be manufacturing variations during lens production so this is my question: How can I check out my lens to make sure I got a good one? Especially from those who own this lens, what should I be looking out for, and what "tests" can I perform to check out this lens. I am using this lens on a D7100. Thanks in advance for your help.

[quote=jerryc41]LensRentals recommends turning off VR, IS, OS (or whatever) when traveling with a lens.

Ok stupid follow up question; I assume this would not apply to lenses that are not mounted on a camera body, as there would be no power available to them. Wouldn't turning the camera power switch to off accomplish the same thing for a VR lens that was mounted on the camera?

I saw a little blurb from Nikon on Facebook this morning. Not much detail - just a "teaser."

Here is the Nikon press release.

Must have taken a lot of grand kid and waterfall pics. You should be able to get around 800 raw files on a 32gb card.

The truth is I am very bad about clearing off photos from my cards. The couple of dozen or so photos I took that day brought the total raw files up to 999. That is when I got the FULL message in the view finder. I just removed the "raw" card from slot one and kept on taking Jpegs in slot 2 until I got back to the car and my spare cards.

Is that an F4 Phantom???? (Drop tail and slatted wings)

That is an RF-4C Phantom II. I flew those for the first 7 years I was in the U.S. Air Force. It is the photo reconnaissance version of the F-4.

Memory cards are considerably more durable than many think. From having them run over to washing them in a machine they keep on ticking.

You might like this video from DigitalRev several years ago.

That video makes my once thru the washer seem like a walk in the park.

Well I accidentally did the "wash and wear" test on a couple of 32GB Lexar professional 633x 95MB/s cards. I shoot with a Nikon D7100 and have slot one set to Raw and slot 2 set to Large JPG Fine. The Raw card filled up while shooting grandkids and waterfalls yesterday so I swapped both cards out and kept on going. I should have put the removed SD cards back in my photo gear backpack BUT slid them into my shirt pocket instead. Came home from work today and saw the cards sitting on a napkin on the kitchen counter. Asked my wife where she had found them - "in the washer" was the reply.

Good news. Using my Transcend USB 3.0 card reader BOTH cards read just fine and I was able to transfer all photos to the PC. What a relief. Both cards then formatted just fine. My lucky day. As we used to say when flying for the Air Force "rather be lucky than good any day."

yes I mistakenly bid on it on ebay and of course won the bid... not sure if many people actually use the Sigma camera but if so this is a good deal for them

I wonder if Sigma would change the lens mount to Nikon or Canon? If so for how much? May be worth inquiring.
